I leave on the assumption that you are familiar with the work and looking at different recordings. I started out with this famous recording featuring Dawn Upshaw which actually made the Top 10 in Britain, if I remember correctly. I have come to prefer another recording, by Joanna Koslowska with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra (though I never experienced the Upshaw version as flawed). I had become addicted to this music and had gone looking for alternative recordings; at times I owned five different ones. Now, this one and the Koslowska version are left. The previous reviewer is right to say that any version of this symphony will be compared to the 1992 David Zinman/Dawn Upshaw interpretation. But to say that this Antoni Wit/Zofia Kilanowicz version is better is, in my opinion, incorrect. Rather, it offers a slightly different but equally valid interpretation. Whereas Zinman's has a clarity of line that is crisp and beautiful to behold, the Wit version is more lush. It has a greater depth but this does produce the occasional smudge. Wit produces a good balance between the high and low strings, but the joins between sections are not always seamless. "Beatus Vir", 1979, after the election of Pope John Paul II, the first Polish Pope, the first non-Italian Pope for quite a long time. This fundamental work is supposed to express through some verses chosen in the Psalms the full confidence and trust of man in God. That was a time when Poland had to live through several difficult periods, and even one full decade of agitation, submission or resistance. The communist order was running on its very last leg and the road had not been paved lately, so the trip to the gate out of this pseudo-socialism was rough, chaotic and definitely full of discomfort and pain. Having encountered the ubiquitous 3rd symphony, this was my next Gorecki purchase. The music is modern and challenging but all the more worthwhile for it. If you like string music of Nyman and Glass this won’t present too much of a challenge. The music is complex, plaintive and angry at the same time. 'Already It Is Dusk' being thoroughly modern 'Quasi una Fantasia' brooding and dangerous. Well worth the time and effort.

Having encountered the ubiquitous 3rd symphony, this was my next Gorecki purchase. The music is modern and challenging but all the more worthwhile for it. If you like string music of Nyman and Glass this won’t present too much of a challenge. The music is complex, plaintive and angry at the same time. 'Already It Is Dusk' being thoroughly modern 'Quasi una Fantasia' brooding and dangerous. Well worth the time and effort.
