I can't judge this from a musicians point of view, or from anything apart from that this music connects with some bit inside of me that I can't explain in technical language. Sorrowful yes, you certainly feel that raw emotion from this album. It is also very peaceful and grounding - not great over-worked symphony that makes you wallow in your own depression. Very simple and beautiful. All I can say is that this music connects with some inner part of me and that I love it. It's rather personal and you should take a listen to it before you buy it - but I'm sure you'll love it.

Much less familiar than the famous Dawn Upshaw recording, this is in many ways even better than that superb recording. Here the orchestra is recorded to better and fuller effect, with the basses and cellos given wonderful prominence particularly in the First Movement. Joanna Kozlowska gives a heart-rending performance. For anyone who wants their appetite for this important work whetted anew, I strongly recommend this. Perhaps it is the pure Polishness of the performers -- one feels this is the whole tragic 20th century history of Poland being unfolded before one. Quite marvellous.

The previous reviewer is right to say that any version of this symphony will be compared to the 1992 David Zinman/Dawn Upshaw interpretation. But to say that this Antoni Wit/Zofia Kilanowicz version is better is, in my opinion, incorrect. Rather, it offers a slightly different but equally valid interpretation. Whereas Zinman's has a clarity of line that is crisp and beautiful to behold, the Wit version is more lush. It has a greater depth but this does produce the occasional smudge. Wit produces a good balance between the high and low strings, but the joins between sections are not always seamless. For example, whilst Zofia Kilanowicz's singing is faultlessly beautiful, the return to the canon in the first movement produced no blaze ... Read More:

"Beatus Vir", 1979, after the election of Pope John Paul II, the first Polish Pope, the first non-Italian Pope for quite a long time. This fundamental work is supposed to express through some verses chosen in the Psalms the full confidence and trust of man in God. That was a time when Poland had to live through several difficult periods, and even one full decade of agitation, submission or resistance. The communist order was running on its very last leg and the road had not been paved lately, so the trip to the gate out of this pseudo-socialism was rough, chaotic and definitely full of discomfort and pain. What a find,- easily the best of the RPO discs I've heard so far and a performance which doesn't deserve to have fallen from the catalogues in the first place. For those who don't know this (almost ubiquitous) work, it was written in soviet-era Poland in 1975s and is characterised as a Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. It is based on Orthodox lament as well as folk song and uses minimal(ist) material to create tapestries of sound, sometimes soaring and sometimes dark and reverberant, which feature long sustained notes as well as gently dissonant clusters of notes. Imagine the Tallis fantasia accompanied by a Slavic Basso Profundo-sound (from the double basses and cellos) and suggestions of tolling bells (by the strings) and you'll be on the right track, ... I heard this for the first time on the recent BBC Auschwitz documentary, and then, by strange coincidence I seemed to hear it all over. I'm already a Gorecki fan, but this is now a firm favourite. It's sparse, coldly seductive and unbearably beautiful in places. After Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, other music seems syrupy. One listening is not enough.

The recorded sound, and particularly the placing of the voice in relation to the orchestra, is extraordinarily effective and Zofia Wilanowicz is a truly lovely singer. Anyone succumbing to music like this is letting himself or herself be dumbed-down, it seems to me. For me real music involves the brain and the mind, not just the senses. To go and on repeating a single phrase over and over...and over and.....in the manner of Mr M Nyman is trifling with music and worse. We all know that the device can be brilliantly effective, as in Pachelbel's canon or Ravel's bolero, and more than just effective as in Beethoven's 7th.
