Crystalline harmonies and distilled thought abound in György Kurtág's imaginative world. His music is by turns dark and obsessive, light and playful. Kurtág hints at Wagnerian proportions using Webern's tiny language. The obvious brevity of the music performed here - so magically by the Keller Quartet - is of little importance: the music has a resonance that lasts long after hearing it. This disc is an ideal way into the music of a sometimes stark and witty mind.

Kurtag defies labelling: not atonal but hardly melodic; emotional but not Romantic; serious yet playful.

This CD, as its name indicates, is of fragments from Kafka's diaries, sung by a soprano to the accompaniment of a sole violin (the violinist being a serial collaborator with Kurtag). If this premise seems odd, it's not so far from the lieder of Romantic composers, putting poetry to music.

This CD has great emotional power, the performers getting into the soul of Kurtag's music. However, it's hardly easy listening and to some can seem downright hard work. If on first play you hate it, don't despair: by play 3 you'll either be hooked for life or it won't be for you.

6.Visions de l'Amen: Messiaen - Schütz / Kurtág from: Col Legno
July 26, 2005
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Visions de l'Amen: Messiaen - Schütz / Kurtág
Visions de l'Amen for two pianos is the first work Messiaen composed after having been released from a German prisoner of war camp during the second world war and also one of his last on an overtly religious theme for some time. It was performed to great acclaim a number of times during and immediately after the war and provided the first instance for his future partner Loriod to play alongside Messiaen on equal footing.
Across its seven sections the somewhat gothic mood hardly varies, it's all very insistent music to be played (and played as such on this disc) with real passion and conviction, evidently some of the anger and despair of those war times found its way into this work.
The music of the first two visions is very forthright, with distinct ... Read More:

Firstly this CD is compliled of two excellent choices of modern viola repertoire, Bartok Concerto and the lesser acclaimed Eotvos. Down to personal taste many may find Kashkasian's performance extreme, which to me hives the Bartok the character which it needs. Tempo's are generally more relaxed and the recording of the Bartok is 23'25, three minutes longer than the Boosey and Hawkes duration of ca.20.25 (taken from the score). Note this recording is of the original edition and not the revised edition which is now more commonly sought (though there are very few minor differences between the two). Kashkasian's tone is commonly very bold and full and colours range dramatically - no two notes are the same in the whole recording. As a Zimmerman fan this CD is definately ... Read More:
