I don't usually add yet another five star rating to a bunch of already existing five star ratings because what's the point? I'll make an exception for this CD because it moved me like little music has in my life. Still, the question remains: What to add to the other euphoric reviews? I'd like to add a warning and a comparison.

You have to know what you get. There are only two pieces on this disc, "Spiegel im Spiegel" (mirror in the mirror) (A) and "Für Alina" (for Alina) (B). They are performed A-B-A-B-A. This may seem pointless to some listeners. Be patient! Give this time to sink in. You will be highly rewarded!

The most touching musical moments that I know are the second movements from Beethoven's 4th and 5th ... Read More:

Spiritual, contemplative, meditative ... these are some of the descriptions usually associated with Arvo Pärt, the 'holy minimalist' or 'tintinnabulist' from Estonia. But as with the soubriquets, the usual descriptions of his music can be misleading. Tabula Rasa begins with a shriek which is rather more disquieting than meditative, or spiritual, or anything else. What follows, however, is engrossing. There are silences, in a work as fragmented as Bruckner, and the intimation of eastern spirituality in its percussive elements - so at least the tintinnabulist term applies here. This 'bell-like' sound is suggested elsewhere, too. Restricted to notes of the triad and using harmonics, violins mimic the art of campanology.

Tabula Rasa is ... Read More:

This is a better CD than ECM's Alina, as it covers the same ground - i.e. Arvo's tintinnabuli chamber work - but offers a slightly fuller repertoire. In other words, unlike the ECM, this CD offers three different Spiegels (all largely similiar, it has to be admitted, but beautiful nonetheless, and does include all three versions - for violin, viola and cello, where the ECM only offered violin and cello); Alina in its original version (this is where the ECM disc is at it's best and most annoying in only offering great improvisations on this simplest and most beautiful of Arvo's early tintinnabuli works, but neglecting to include the original version); and the wonderful Variations for Arinuschka. My only slight gripe is that it doesn't include Hymn to a Great ... Read More:

I'm making a real confession here - until we purchased this on Saturday September 8 2001 I had barely registered in my consciousness the name of Arvo Part, let alone these works.

I'm converted.

Wandering in a record store in Nottingham my partner picked this CD up and I asked him what it was. "I've not heard any of his stuff but...". I looked at the cover - it struck me as intriguing. I read some of the notes inside. Some mutterings about driving through the American mid-west and hearing "Tabula Rasa" on the radio.

"Lets go into the listening room..." I suggested.

We listened to part of "Tabula Rasa" first. Within a couple of bars I could feel the chill down my spine - then ... Read More:

Hypnotic; healing are not terms I'd usually use in a review of a piece of music - too much like crystal gazing (Be Bop Deluxe - great track!), copper bracelets & ley lines - airy-fairy stuff that I usually ignore with a sneer but Pärt's music has an effect that does indeed induce (at least in me) feelings of peace and warm fuzziness. I first heard this in a TV documentary about the piece itself. A nice little doco – watch it if you can catch it. All the major protagonists were there on the screen except the composer who seems a reserved quiet person who shuns too much publicity – good for him! The conductor, Tõnu Kaljuste, has worked extensively with Arvo Pärt and this shows in his ability to bring out the best in choir and ... Read More:

Music : Weihnachtsoratorium BWV 248 - Christmas Oratorio Part 1 To 6 [1999]
Brilliant. Absolutely, stunningly, mind-blowingly brilliant. This was the kick-off concert for the Gardiner Bach cantata pilgrimage of 2000, performed in the Herderkirche, Weimar. I have Gardiner's CD of the Weihnachtsoratorium, which I previously regarded as the best version. Not any more. This knocks spots off it. Soloists (vocal and instrumental), the EBS and of course the marvellous Monteverdis are on top form and the whole thing crackles with excitement. Gardiner clearly has a ball; no routine music-making this, this is passionate with a capital P. He also has a feeling for the dance-like rhythms in much of the piece - just listen to the Monteverdis sizzle through the skittering opening chorale of Cantata 5 and see how long you can stop your feet from tapping. ... Its daunting the world of classical music and very exciting when you do not know your way. Here on this disc you can meet three great and important voices. For me the music of ustvolskaya is worth its weight in gold. Her works are hard to find and here you get to meet her and pick up beatuiful works by Part and Silvestrov. Its hard to go wrong...

I bought this cd in the hope it would be as good as if not better than the first cd i ever bought by Part(De Profundis). At first i couldn't quite get into the movement of the pieces, which tend to change dramatically in tone and rythmn, but eventually found this to be the element of the whole success of the cd.

Parts work is mostly the kind you must listen to by yourself and prefereably at night on a walkman. It is for contemplation, he is a completely devoted man, to his music and to god (which is the focus of all his work), and this never fails to come across. From the light and joyous tone of the first piece to the gentle and heart breaking simplicity of the last few tracks, it really is a feast of choral minimalism. The recording is excellent as usual ... Read More:
