If someone was to ask me to go through my music collection and pick out the perfect piece of music, Alina would be it. Neither offensive nor boring or shallow, it's uncomplicated with thought provoking phrasing, holding one's attention time after time without growing tiring. Yes, the tracks are slightly repetitive and the CD only has 2 tracks (albeit varied), but believe me you could stick your player on repeat and have this running for a couple of hours without wanting to change it.

What is interesting is that everyone who has heard this CD playing has complemented the music and asked for the details. It's a winner with my wife, who despises at least 90% of my music taste. It even manages to calm my baby down.

Music : Part - Spiegel Im Spiegel
This is a better CD than ECM's Alina, as it covers the same ground - i.e. Arvo's tintinnabuli chamber work - but offers a slightly fuller repertoire. In other words, unlike the ECM, this CD offers three different Spiegels (all largely similiar, it has to be admitted, but beautiful nonetheless, and does include all three versions - for violin, viola and cello, where the ECM only offered violin and cello); Alina in its original version (this is where the ECM disc is at it's best and most annoying in only offering great improvisations on this simplest and most beautiful of Arvo's early tintinnabuli works, but neglecting to include the original version); and the wonderful Variations for Arinuschka. My only slight gripe is that it doesn't include Hymn ... Read More:

Arvo Part's "Tabula Rasa" is an absolutely astonishing piece of music. It is part prayer, a part meditation and a part love letter, burning with passion and sufferring. It is at the same time filled with yearning and longing for a higher state of being and every listening puts my mind in a very unique, spiritual and meditative state. I can't recommend this CD more, for the perfromances on it are all absolutely astounding, especially the live recording of the title track, with its sounds of the audience and the resonances from the hall where it was recorded. Its like a piece of music made in heaven and completely transcends our normal mundane experiences........

Hypnotic; healing are not terms I'd usually use in a review of a piece of music - too much like crystal gazing (Be Bop Deluxe - great track!), copper bracelets & ley lines - airy-fairy stuff that I usually ignore with a sneer but Pärt's music has an effect that does indeed induce (at least in me) feelings of peace and warm fuzziness. I first heard this in a TV documentary about the piece itself. A nice little doco – watch it if you can catch it. All the major protagonists were there on the screen except the composer who seems a reserved quiet person who shuns too much publicity – good for him! The conductor, Tõnu Kaljuste, has worked extensively with Arvo Pärt and this shows in his ability to bring out the best ... Read More:

Its daunting the world of classical music and very exciting when you do not know your way. Here on this disc you can meet three great and important voices. For me the music of ustvolskaya is worth its weight in gold. Her works are hard to find and here you get to meet her and pick up beatuiful works by Part and Silvestrov. Its hard to go wrong...

Music : Fratres/Cantus/Summa/Spiegel im Spiegel etc
My first acquaintance with the music of Arvo Part was when I heard Spiegel im Spiegel, one of the tracks on this album, on Classic FM while driving to work one morning. Tasmin Little's wonderfully sustained violin playing is perfectly balanced by Martin Roscoe's piano accompaniment. I was immediately struck by the sheer beauty and purity of this music, as well as its beguiling simplicity. I sat in the car park for five minutes until the piece had ended, and then needed another couple of minutes to reflect on what I had just heard. That evening I ordered the CD from Amazon, and I have just heard it in its entirety. Although Spiegel im Spiegel remains the highlight for me, I found all the pieces enchanting. The performances are superb and the sound quality is flawless. ... Read More:

I bought this cd in the hope it would be as good as if not better than the first cd i ever bought by Part(De Profundis). At first i couldn't quite get into the movement of the pieces, which tend to change dramatically in tone and rythmn, but eventually found this to be the element of the whole success of the cd.

Parts work is mostly the kind you must listen to by yourself and prefereably at night on a walkman. It is for contemplation, he is a completely devoted man, to his music and to god (which is the focus of all his work), and this never fails to come across. From the light and joyous tone of the first piece to the gentle and heart breaking simplicity of the last few tracks, it really is a feast of choral minimalism. The recording is excellent as usual ... Read More:

This 'cathedralized' version of Another Look, compared with the Early Voice recording, has had to be taken slower, running for 10 minutes longer than the previous 50 minute one. The new pace lets one appreciate what's happening musically, the detail. The recording overflows with atmosphere, and Glass's music is especially timeless, sounding like something from the middle ages, yet modern. It's probably no coincidence that when The Choir of the 21s Century and Christopher Bowers-Broadbent performed this in summer last year it was on the programme with a piece by Orlandus Lassus.

This is maybe not the most accessible piece of Glass, despite being one of my personal favourites. But if you like the Early Voice recording, this is well worth experiencing for another ... Read More:
