This recording was my first introduction to Stockhausen. Very clear demonstration of the birth of techno/electronic music and therefore a good buy for anybody tracing musical roots. The movement, depth and shear strangeness of Stockhausen's Kontakte makes you either profoundly shocked at his genius or wonder what all the fuss is about. In more recent times this piece greatly influenced Irmin Schmidt (who trained under Stockhausen and formed CAN) and Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman. 5/5 for pure genius

I had the Collegium Aureum LP mentioned below- described by one reviewer as "probably the most beautiful music of the twentieth century, but undeniably boring". I can see exactly what the reviewer meant, but enjoyed the LP immensely, so I have seen Stimmung live every time I have noticed a performance. It is a great composition, but very vulnerable to a weak performance, of which I have heard two and unfortunately this is one of them. I do not play the CD often the new version (Hillier) is worth considering

I can't recommend this film strongly enough. No matter whether you are a disciple or sceptic about Stockhausen's music, it is an extraordinary thing to do to send four musicians up into the air in four separate helicopters and feed this back via a mixing desk into a concerthall with towers of tvs showing them. Watching this film is surreal. I had to pinch myself sometimes, but it is also inspiring: i.e., hey why don't i try to think a bit more outside the box. The piece that Scheffer interestingl documents is the helicopter string quartet from 1995. It is just one part of Stockhausen's wider exploration of 'space' in music. I reviewed the Singcircle version of Stimmung mentioning that this was due out. I like this one, which may be all I need say, though the sound quality makes the performance sound more like human voices than my memories of the Collegium Aureum recording from nineteen seventy whatever. It's not weird synthesizer, new age stuff, just human voices, beautiful and not even boring!

Before I heard it i was sceptical. Helicopter quartet! What IS Stockhausen on now? I dreaded another disappointment -like 'Spiral'or 'Klavierstuke'. But when I heard it I wasn't disappointed - and the helicopters didn't sound ridiculous! Infact it sounded brilliant - I'd never thought that helicopters could sound so good! Of course it's all carefully controlled - it doesn't sound like we've been stood twenty yards from a bunch of helicopters taking off for half an hour! What we hear is the transmission from various microphones inside each of the four helicopters. The main focus is the quartet and they are always slightly louder than the helicopter rotor-blades. There IS a score and the muscians are synchronised by a click ... Read More:
