From the first soul stroking notes of 'O vis aternitatis' there is no doubting the intensity of feeling to be found in both the music and performance.

Recorded over a decade ago, this Sequentia c.d. remains not only the best introduction to the music of Hidegard von Bingen available, but also amongst the finest recordings of mediaeval church music ever made.

All the voices are female and maintain an individual clarity which is distinguishable even when singing in chorus - and in a marvellously atmospheric church acoustic. The voices are sometimes supported by instruments giving a vaguely resonant effect as if the crystal spheres themselves were ringing.

If this sounds as though there is ... Read More:

This record is one of the best early music cds available, or perhaps it IS the very best, despite being over 20 years old. The musicianship, singing and recording are all wonderful, and the sound is so good, your living room will be transformed into a Gothic chapel.

Unfortunately, this disc should come with a musical financial health warning, as newcomers to early music will probably find themselves shelling out for more and more of Emma Kirkby and Gothic Voices' recordings. And that's just the beginning: you'll develop a need for ever more obscure ensembles and composers for the rest of their lives. However, before you remortgage the house to buy similar music on full-price labels like ECM and so on, try the Jeremy Summerly discs on ... Read More:

John Dunstable was an English composer of early polyphonic music during the Medieval and Renaissance era. Born around 1390, probably in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, he was one of the most famous composers in England and Northern Europe during his lifetime and is credited with influencing the development of the `Burgundian School' of composers whose ranks include great names such as Dufay and Binchois.

According to musical sources the correct spelling is `Dunstaple' with a `p', but there remains debate and uncertainty. More certain are his many travels around England and Northern Europe during his lifetime, and he is also thought to have owned properties in Cambridgshire, London and Normandy. His interests were not confined to music, for he ... Read More:

Hildegard's music can be performed in many different ways. There's the 'purist' approach, that seeks to use top-class vocalists such as Emma Kirkby ('Gothic Voices') - who isn't on this album - in arrangements that come as close to the original as possible. The problem is, we simply don't know how the music really sounded when Hildegard wrote it. If you're a specialist, you'll already know why that is. But if you're not, it's all to do with the problems of interpreting the original manuscripts, and guesswork about what instrumentation Hildegard may have used. And we don't know how good Hildegard's nuns were at singing. The chances that any of them came close to technical virtuosi like Kirkby are pretty small.

One thing's for sure, though. Saint ... Read More:

This music, or the opening track `L' homme arme' at least, may sound familiar to some people for it is the melody used on Karl Jenkins' album `The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace'.

Don't blame Karl for plagiarism however, for the original Missa L' homme arme (Mass for the Armed Man) was written during the Renaissance some 5 centuries ago around the mid 1450's and has since been used by more than 20 composers as a cantus firmus for the Roman Catholic Ordinary Mass.

While Dufay's version may not be the original (that honour is variably attributed to French composer Antoine Busnois) its melody line can certainly be traced to it, and considering Guillaume Dufay was the most famous composer in Europe during the mid 15th century he can ... Read More:

If you don't know the Hilliard Ensemble's work, this CD is a great place to start - Dunstable's motets are easy-listening in the best sense of the term. This ensemble must be some of the best performers around, and they don't need to rely on spurious tinkly instrumentations like some interpreters of early music.

This CD represents music from some 900 years ago during the medieval period and is a fine example of early monophonic music. Monophonic, meaning one sound, is that which has a single melody with little or no accompanying harmony. Typical of this type of music is the simple `plainchant'.

Hildegard von Bingen, known also as `Blessed Hildegard' and `Saint Hildegard' was a lady named Hildegard born in the German town of Bingen. She was the first composer of music for whom a biography is written and possibly the most famous female composer since her birth in 1098 to the present day. She was also a noted author, mystic, philosopher, physician, poet, visionary, and found time to be an abbess running a Monastery of some 20 or so members (maybe she was even ... Read More:

Dufay's music would have been notated in a completely different and more primitive style compared to the modern rudiments of notation today, which leaves more room for mistakes to be made. However, this recording of the 'Ensemble Unicorn' displays their masterful interpretation of Dufay's music. As well as overcoming the difficulties of 'translating' the music from medieval manuscripts, they play on early instruments, adding to the recording's authenticity.
If you are new to early music, some of the tracks may surprise you. For example, 'Quel fronte signorille La Dolce Vista' sounds as if it could have been written five centuries later, as it has a very pointilistic style, popular in 20th century 'Avant Garde' music.
It is a shame, then, that medieval music ... Read More:
