This is a magical and the most lavishing production of Nutcracker, performed by world class dancers and presented in grandest scale both musically and theatrically. Svetlanov's choice of tempo is too slow in some of the scenes, but he brings out almost Wagnerian grandeur and emotional intensity in crucial scenes and climaxes. Few productions could capture the other-worldly atmosphere and the richness of the music with such taste and style.

My only disappointment is Miyako Yoshida's stiff and rather sedate rendition of Pas de deux, which does not match the greatness of the music - maybe choreographer's fault? But Alina Cojocaru's graceful performance as Clara more than compensates that. This is filmmed live in such a cleaver way ... Read More:

The music from the Pride and Prejudice 1995 tv series is good music in its own right. I really love the title theme. However, if you have watched the tv series enough times, then the music is inextricably tied to what is going on in the drama, and this serves to intensify the feelings evoked by the music.

This CD is great to own if you love the TV series, as listening to the CD almost makes you feel like you are watching it again!

It is a way of re-experiencing the emotions of the drama.

Most of the contents of these 2 disks were recorded on the occasion of Sibelius's 90th birthday in 1955. The 7th symphony was recorded a year earlier. The fine performances and the historic importance of the material make this set worth buying. Beecham's talk about Sibelius is worth hearing.

I have listened to two other versions of Bach's WTC, including Glenn Gould's attempts. His version is widely and often, cheaply available - I bought his version because of this - but his version is in fact a very idiosyncratic interpretation.

I was impressed by Gould - the virtuosity, the velocity and robotic snap of his playing, but the music sounds like a victim of vicious discipline - it will leave you impressed, but maybe also cold. If you want to discover the Well Tempered Clavier, don't buy Gould's impression first like I did. It is an unsuitable introduction to this work, and apart from leaving me cold, it left me feeling slightly confused and disappointed. Leave it till you know the work, and you will appreciate the eccentricity ... Read More:

Music : Stravinsky-Firebird/Les Noces [2001] (NTSC)
This is a modern ballet and may not appeal to all,the music is unlike whats to be found usually, and some may think it sounds more like the start of a symphony.Leanne Benjamin is,as always superb and flutters around the stage as the Firebird(of Russian legend). All in all a spectacular rendition performed by world class dancers,Jonathon Cope,Genesia Rosato,David Drew,Leanne Benjamin with the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden go on you know you want it,I'd give it 5 stars a smashing experience...

This cd is okay but no better than some of the christmas one`s you get free in the papers! One strange inclusion is Daniel O`Donnell singing "Any dream will do" from the Joseph musical, definately not a Christmas carol! I cannot imagine this is one of the most popular christmas songs around. I would have given this cd 2 and a half out of 5 but as this was not possible have had to give it 3.

Music : Mozart - Symphonies Nos 29, 35 & 38
Being a fan of Sir Tommy's Mozart since my college days,
I've always loved the pre-war LPO series of the Symphonies...
with two exceptions: one major, one minor.

The major problem:
the 1937 29th Symphony, with its orchestral "klinkers" and
its eccentrically slow first movement...The piece was still
new to Beecham and his band (it was new to just about everyone; this was its first commercial recording !) And as we all know, Beecham never re-recorded the 29th commercially.
The minor problem...The 1940 Prague Symphony(the 38th)shares with its 1950 RPO remake the problem of changes of tempo between the edited takes, in the first movement. In the LPO version, slight shifts of tempo are noticeable; in the later ... Read More:
