I'm a big fan of Jim Mullen's charismatic guitar playing, and this album is my favourite of the lot, not only because if Jim's big fat distinctive jazz sound and the superb musicianship of all of the players involved in this trio recording, but also because the melodies of the originals are so beautiful, and Mullen makes them sing. Played here by a native Glaswegian, this is a must for all Mullen fans, Burns fans and jazz guitar enthusiasts alike. It's something you'll never tire of hearing.

I was first introduced to this CD by a friend at uni, and it is now my 'most-listened-to' CD. With the way a lot of contemporary music is moving, it is so refreshing to hear music that is so beautifully tonal, and which creates a calming atmosphere as soon as it is put on. From the opening calls of the soprano in Quanta Qualia, to the closing moments of the last Bluebird variation, the composer's colourful orchestration leaves the listener in awe. One is so relaxed as to be almost in a dream world, with the sense of the might and majesty of nature, which one feels is expressed by the spaciousness in Hawes' textures and harmonies. Steve Reich protege Marc Mellits creates his own slant on minimalism with a nod to the other great figure-head of the movement, Philip Glass. Punchy and accessible, this is a bright and breezy form of post-minimalism, and although I enjoyed it and will probably try to get hold of more of Mellits's work, I myself prefer darker-hued music (such as Glenn Branca). A promising young composer worth watching, and a must for all Reich or Glass fans.
