This is the second volume of tone poems that Vernon Handley has recorded in the wake of his phenomenal account of the Bax symphonies. As with the first volume, this cd contains a mix of the familiar with the less so, together with one premiere recording. As to be expected from someone so completely immersed in the Bax idiom, Handley's interpretations are definitive. The premiere recording is an orchestration by Grham Parlett of "Red Autumn", a piece that Bax originally wrote for solo piano in 1912 and which was then arranged for two pianos twenty years later. Parlett is a seasoned Bax scholar and has orchestrated his music before (notably the marvellous "Tamara" ballet suite, also recorded by Chandos). The work is rather intense ... Read More:

We have loved this album for 30 years. We are so pleased it has been released on CD. It was originally part of a very small collection of gramophone records, and is now one of hundreds of CDs, but it is one we keep playing and playing. The singing is flawless, the songs are wonderful and the arrangements are very clever. What more could you want? It includes The Kings' Singers theme song, "What Kind of Things (do the Kings' Singers sing?)" which is a humorous description of the variety in their music and in their vocal ranges. Other highlights are: Summertime, which is quite close to the original sheet music, carefully arranged for 6 voices. The folk song Scarborough Fair adheres quite closely to the ... Read More:

Excellent! & not all war themes, but mostly. This is one CD that you must purchase and add to your collection, you don't have to be a war film buff either, but it helps. Inspiring stuff without the "stiff upper lip mentality". Even my three year old son was dancing/jumping around the living room! If that's not testimony enough? I don't know what is? Buy it, ya won't regret it!

Having lived with VW symphonies all my life, I was cynical about the idea of the "original" version being resurrected.My fears were groundless -this is glorious music, and the extra sections add to an already great work. I sense the shadow of Ravel hovering in the shadows -VW had studied with him for a short while - but the instrumentation and use of themes is wonderful. All praise to Richard Hickox, a great champion of British music if ever there was one, and to the LSO. This performance has become one of my Desert island discs.

I love this score for its grandeur and beauty. One would imagine big pieces like those lushly Hollywood histrionics production, but it is not. The overall impression is very subtle, just the right note here and there. I do beg your pardon as I can't write about music, but I like the world to share my joy for this album. There is no one important piece here, but collectively, they take my mind away and send me back to old English charm in the countryside, on a late summer evening. Love it!

Really glad I bought this. I always loved the music, but hated that I couldn't understand the words. Now I have both! Highly recommended.
