If someone was to ask me to go through my music collection and pick out the perfect piece of music, Alina would be it. Neither offensive nor boring or shallow, it's uncomplicated with thought provoking phrasing, holding one's attention time after time without growing tiring. Yes, the tracks are slightly repetitive and the CD only has 2 tracks (albeit varied), but believe me you could stick your player on repeat and have this running for a couple of hours without wanting to change it.

What is interesting is that everyone who has heard this CD playing has complemented the music and asked for the details. It's a winner with my wife, who despises at least 90% of my music taste. It even manages to calm my baby down.

I can see how sax fans find this album a revelation but it is a stain on the track record of the Hilliard Ensemble. I can see (kinda) what the involved parties tried to do but it still is painful to listing to it and even with a lot of good will this is simply a waste of money and time. To all those admirers of the Hilliard Ensemble: Don't do it to yourself!

Arvo Part's "Tabula Rasa" is an absolutely astonishing piece of music. It is part prayer, a part meditation and a part love letter, burning with passion and sufferring. It is at the same time filled with yearning and longing for a higher state of being and every listening puts my mind in a very unique, spiritual and meditative state. I can't recommend this CD more, for the perfromances on it are all absolutely astounding, especially the live recording of the title track, with its sounds of the audience and the resonances from the hall where it was recorded. Its like a piece of music made in heaven and completely transcends our normal mundane experiences........

Beautiful, haunting sonorous music - spiritual rather than religious in feel. I heard a track on Classic FM and was so impressed I had to buy the CD - at bargain price on Marketplace.

The CD has arrangements of Gurdjieff's spiritual music for cello and piano, as well as five pieces by pianist Tsabropoulos. The music often has an Armenian, Ukranian and Greek Orthodox tone and is played in a subdued and almost introvert manner. Piano and cello match each other perfectly sounding warm, dark and achingly beautiful.

Even at full price you will not be disappointed by this CD. Put it on when you are alone and need to think stuff through - or share it intimately with someone you love. Be warned. This is not background music. It will cast ... Read More:

6.Coruscating by: John Surman

On John Surman and Christopher Laurence's Coruscating, sax, bass and classical strings swoop clear and free as October skies - with no kitsch in sight this is Millennial music for our isle full of noises. Lacking the sometimes overbearing, older sister gravitas of Jan Garbarek's Officium project, and with no hint of minimalistic make-do (the music is too generous for that) there is a shy smile loose in these tunes that sounds wonderfully like the freedom for happy and sad thoughts to mingle in the smoke and the spray, not quite able to tell one another apart.

Hypnotic; healing are not terms I'd usually use in a review of a piece of music - too much like crystal gazing (Be Bop Deluxe - great track!), copper bracelets & ley lines - airy-fairy stuff that I usually ignore with a sneer but Pärt's music has an effect that does indeed induce (at least in me) feelings of peace and warm fuzziness. I first heard this in a TV documentary about the piece itself. A nice little doco – watch it if you can catch it. All the major protagonists were there on the screen except the composer who seems a reserved quiet person who shuns too much publicity – good for him! The conductor, Tõnu Kaljuste, has worked extensively with Arvo Pärt and this shows in his ability to bring out the best in choir ... Read More:

I bought this CD and "Officium" some time ago and still marvel at the way the music transports me to another level! My particular favourite is the Tallis track, "O Lord in Thee is all my trust" - it is incredibly haunting and evocative, with the plaintive saxophone melody soaring away, tearing at your soul, and yet so uplifting. Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble really work well together, one complementing the other. I think you either love their musical expressions in these CDs or hate them - there is no in between!

When you hear this album, you cannot help but be taken in by its hypnotic building and sequencing of sounds upon and around one another. You also cannot help but notice how much an absolute myriad of artists that have emerged over the last 30 years are in debt to Reich.
From, as other reviews have stated, Eno to Aphex to almost any innovative electronic musician - parallels can be drawn to Reich. A lot of jazz fans will also find huge rewards here. The riffing on a theme that Reich works to perfection is the essence of jazz, be it more traditional work or more avant garde artists, such as Deathprod and Nils Petter Molvaer.
One point to note is that this album really opened up for me after I listened to it on headphones. I'd listened to it a few times ... Read More:
