The reviewer above is spot-on in his assessment of this set. Lewis' virtuosity allows him to sound spontaneous, secure and sensitive at the same time. He presents Beethoven as a much more agreeable character than we are used to when listening to more extreme interpreters such as Kovacevich or Pollini.

The flipside of the human Beethoven is that the frenzy that can be created in the Hammerklavier (one of the previous volumes) or the last movement of Op 111 is replaced by a range of more down-to-earth emotions. Lewis' Beethoven doesn't do jazz. It's different, but extremely impressive nonetheless. And in further agreement with the other reviewer: the ending of Op111 is pure magic...

This is smooth, understated and confident singing of Handel arias. Padmore manages to bring freshness to Where E're You Walk from Semele, but I love Waft Her Angles Through the Sky from Jephtha - the long slow lines exposing the honey in his voice. Arguably the best track is described as a bonus - As Steals the Morn (L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato) - which is odd since it is the name of the album. Padmore is joined by Lucy Crowe and they both have such clarity that they reveal the interplay between the vocal parts in this duet. They bring a soaring, full sound that is uplifting and immensely satisfying. It is worth buying the CD just for this one duet.

I think this CD also reinforces just how good Handel's writing for the voice ... Read More:

Delightful, exquisite. Some echo, but otherwise lovely sound. It took me a while to accept the countertenor sound as anything other than a good party trick. But I now love the sound as much as the output from any decent tenor, baritone, saoprano or mezzo.

There's been some criticism that Scholl might be overstylised for this material - but that is just Scholl's wonderful technique. If you want a more informal style, then try Sting's take on Dowland. Personally - I like both.

This is a modern interpretation of this classic opera with simple sets relying on abstract shapes and use of colour for effects. A clear understanding of the plot in advance will as always aid your understanding and enjoyment of the performance. And enjoy this I did. All the principals were excellent and the orchestra and chorus were outstanding. Blu Ray delivers vibrant clours and excellent picture definition. And it sounded great on my home cinema system for which I used a Pro Logic 11 setting.
Buy with confidence unless you prefer a traditional production. I used to dislike modern updated opera but I have been won over now and this will be among my favourites.

This is only the second Lassus disc I've heard which I would recommend without any hesitation - the other is the Tallis Scholars 'Osculetur me' disc. I say that without having heard Herreweghe's other Lassus, which I must now go and do! The singing is beautiful, gently passionate, exactly what Lassus needs. Very highly recommended.

I have been listening to Bach's violin concerti on and off for over 20 years. And, I simply never tire of them. There is something around technical brilliance, profusion of melodies and balance; a kind of perfection. This particular recording is top notch.

There are so many "cycles" of Beethoven's wonderful sonatas available, that it seems hard to justify yet another set. Nevertheless, Paul Lewis takes a seat at the top table, and this CD is very highly recommended.

I have sets by Barenboim on EMI from the 1960s and 1970s, Artur Schnabel on Naxos Historical from the 1930s, Rudolph Serkin on Sony from the 1950s and 1960s and various other performances from the likes of Pollini, for example. These are, naturally, all very different interpretively.

In my non-expert way, I would say that Paul Lewis imposes a little less of his personality on this music, allowing Beethoven's voice to sing. In other words, an almost ideal interpretation.

The clincher is the fantastic engineering ... Read More:

10.Handel - Complete Violin Sonatas by: Andrew Manze

There's certainly nothing overblown about Andrew Manze's style of playing. The best known of these sonatas by Handel is the Sonata in D Opus 1 No 13 which opens the recording. To some ears, Manze's tone might be too cool and spare - in the opening measures particularly. To my mind, the sound he creates is perfectly suited to the demands of these small-scale, occasional chamber pieces of the early C18.

As Manze's illuminating essay that accompanies the CD makes clear, only five of the eight complete sonatas on the disc are now thought to be authentically Handel. The others were probably passed off as Handel by unscrupulous publishing houses cashing in on a big name. It might be seen, therefore, as a wonderful opportunity to play the musicologist and 'spot the ... Read More:
