Gibbons possess a rare and wonderful gift that brings the music of Alkan alive! His technical brilliance, and virtuosic skill are obvious, and at times one listens to the crystal clear execution of the music and wonders, "How is playing that with just two hands?!" Jaw-dropping! This CD is a treasure and should be part of every music lovers collection! Go on... buy it!

There are some pieces of music that just have to be listened to. The Concerto for Solo Piano by Alkan is one of those pieces. It is an electrifying tour of all that is best about Romantic virtuosic piano music. Here the marvellous playing (how much his hands must have been aching by the 20 minute mark, but you would never know!) and the brilliant CD notes makes for a remarkably accessible combination. I'm not sure that I could have taken on the first movement without the notes which give an overall structural analysis (albeit in a very brief and accessible way). The repeated notes section is something else!!
The second movement is interesting (each of the movements is a 'study' in and of itself, each forming one twelfth of the epic cycle ... Read More:

This is the ultimate alkan cd. Anyone wanting an introduction to his wonderful oeuvre should look no further. This is actually pretty much my favourite cd of all. I am a fan of all types of music, but i would say that fans of more aggressive and thrillingly dramatic music would be the ones to enjoy this the most. Extremely alive, emotional, dramatic , exciting , and diverse. THIS IS ALKAN!

I was very pleased with this recording. Although I am certainly not used to listening to pieces of music less than three minutes long (I tend to go for longer, more ambitious works), it is very refreshing to hear miniatures like these being performed by such a pianist as Laurent Martin. The range of moods and colours which Alkan manages to portray here is amazing; from the clumsy footsteps of the man in boots ("L'homme aux sabots") to the impressionistic images created in "Les Soupirs" (prophetic of Debussy - who studied Alkan's works while at the Paris Conservatoire). From the cantankerous, darkly petulant nature of "Increpatio", to the colourful yet spiky devilry of the tone clusters in "Les Diablotins". Typically for Alkan, he finishes off the work ...
