Some of von Karajan's late 70s recordings for DG are simply stunning in every regard and the 2/3 of the Roman Trilogy on offer are a match for anything more recent. To be fair, they rather overshadow the others morsels on this CD, but I for one have no interest in the sneering sometimes directed at this full strings version of Albinoni's - or should that be Giazotto's - Adagio. It certainly carries more emotion at this temperature and tempo, being little more than a trifle if done 'authentically'. If you can live without Roman festivals, this is the one to get. Karajan fans will already know what to do.

Several years ago Naxos began recording the complete Boccherini cello concertos - there are twelve of them - with Tim Hugh as the soloist. For some reason, this third and final issue containing Concerti 9-12 features, rather than Hugh, the eminent British cellist Rafael Wallfisch. If I had to choose, I'd say that Wallfisch does a slightly better job than Hugh, but there's actually little to choose between them. Hugh, principal cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra, although not as well known as Wallfisch, is a fine musician. In the first two volumes the accompanying orchestra was the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Anthony Halstead. Here we have Nicholas Ward conducting the Northern Chamber Orchestra. This is a brilliant disc. I'd previously thought Boccherini to be a sort of charming but slightly wallpaperish composer of amiable, rather forgettable music. Not any more. I listened to this disc on the basis that Biondi is occasionally bonkers (try his Mozart Violin Concerti!) but never, ever dull and often quite brilliant. Here, he and Europa Galante are brilliant. From the moment they get stuck into the opening Allegro non molto there is verve, delight and occasionally real pathos in their playing, and the standard of musicianship is amazing. This disc was a complete revelation to me, and now I can see the point of Boccherini. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone. I bet you'll just love it - I do.
