There is no better opportunity to find out what the composer really had in mind for his/her works than to hear the composer themself performing them! This recording, with Maurice Durufle conducting his own Requiem, gives the listener something more than the written music can give -- an aural history of a piece. Other recordings might have better mixing or acoustics, but this is true art by the artist himself. The 3 organ works at the end are stunning. Of all the recordings of the Durufle Requiem you might end up with in your library, this should be the one you purchase first.

The Cleobury, St John's College recording of Durufle's Requiem is a gem. Unlike other recordings it eschews the operatic and attains a yearning frailty and simplicity entirely in keeping with the work's themes. It remains, for my money, the finest and most moving recording of this composition I have heard.

At first, I was a little hesitant in buying a recording of the complete works of the greatest French romantic organ composer (which Duruflé surely is!?) not being played on a French instrument nor indeed by a French organist, but this recording has proved a musical marvel! The organ in question at first does not seem to have the right specification for such a programme, but the sound produced is more than just appropriate, it is stunning. The instrument does not possess any truly glorious Cavailles-Colls-style reeds as such, but the ones it does have seem to do the job perfectly well (although the pedal reeds are a little weak in places for this repertoire, e.g. Fuge et la Théme du Carillon des heures de la cathédrale de Soisson, op.12) and ...
