I was very disappointed. Admittedly the filming was very good, but I was expecting much more. In future I will stick with grand opera. Am I wrong but did not Domingo have a famous aria to sing in Pagliacci? Where was it?

This has long been my favourite studio recording of "Cavalleria" although it rarely gets a mention by the critics. You could not find three more grand, passionate and italianate voices than those of Simionato, Del Monaco and Cornell MacNeil, all in their prime in 1961, under the baton of the greatest post-war Italian opera conductor, Tullio Serafin. This is as authentic a performance as you could hope to encounter. There are plenty of other excellent recordings of this opera, including Serafin's earlier version with Callas and Di Stefano, Karajan's with Cossotto and Bergonzi, and Erede's 1957 set with the dream team of Tebaldi, Bjorling and Bastianini - all feature wonderful singing with Italian orchestras and casts, but I find myself coming ... This set really stuns.
Julia Varady is a superb Santuzza, her voice is especially beautiful in this role. Pavarotti gives a first rate account of Turiddu, his big voice can portray the vulgar aspects of the character well. Pavarotti's rendition of "Viva il vino spumeggiante" is a real highlight of this set. The Alfio of Cappuccilli is a strong, unexaggerated potrayal and Carmen Gonzales has lots of charm as Lola.
Both the orchestra and the cast are served well by the excellent stereo. Gavazzeni is a great conductor of Mascagni (as can be heard in his brilliant recording of "L'amico Fritz" with Pavarotti and Freni) and draws nice warmth from the National Philharmonic. All in all a perfect set.

I bought this CD solely for the recording of Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, rather than Mascagni's Cavaliers Rusticana (which is nevertheless performed brilliantly). Having read reviews of di Stefano's performance I wanted to hear for myself. Indeed, as some reviewers have already commented, his rendition of Canio eclipses all others that I have heard, including that of Caruso. During the famous aria "Vesti la giubba", his voice is so powerful and emotionally charged there is no other recording quite like it. Although Callas' voice at the time of recording was starting to lose its quality, her rendition of Nedda is still very beautiful and gives the impression that Nedda is a real woman with powerful emotions (unlike some other ...
