I had never heard of this opera until I saw it on French television a year ago and was totally spellbound - I couldn't wait for it to be available on DVD. It is guaranteed to cheer you up - the music, the lyrics and the choreography are all excellent and Dame Felicity Lott is outstanding. There are lots of very interesting things going on in the background too with the chorus - keep your eyes peeled for the unusual headgear and props by some of the soldiers!

Well worth the money.

Got this out of curiosity and, although it's not really my thing, I play it now and then for something different.

Although the 'Can-Can' is on here you really need to give this music a chance - there's a lot more here than first meets the ear - there's a lot more depth than you'd think and some moments of real beauty.

Great playing and the recording is in the demonstration class -exceptionally clear with powerful deep bass.

Go on, check it out - you'll be surprised.

I adore Svetlanov's outrageously grandiose account of Nutcracker (Melodiya 2CD, another Nutcracker Must) or Mravinsky's deeply felt live recordings (sadly not complete), but this truly great and heart-felt recording by Bonynge is the one I always come back to, for its magical atmosphere and other-worldly beauty.

Each time I listen to this music, it never fails to move me with a sense of happy sadness. Maybe because Tchaikovsky wrote this music to the memory of his lost sister and his affection for her is haunting every piece? Or because Tchaikovsky unconciously described the world beyond death, while Symphony Pathetique depicts death itself? Anyway, Bonynge captures that haunting beauty and the sense of other-worldliness better ... Read More:

Well, what a truly pleasant surprise this cd was!
The catchiness of Offenbachs melodies -no, I am not referring only to the famous can-can melody which is the most popular reminder of Orpheus - but La Vie Parisienne and La Belle Helene are also full of humour and hummable themes. After all, it was the success of Offenbach which later bore fruit in England with Gilbert & Sullivan composing operettas.
Sadlers Wells have made a wonderful recording here with singing of the highest standard, and it is truly a delight to listen to this superb recording of operettas which perhaps should be more popular than they have been.

Memories stick.
This recording, which I first heard as a child, was my introduction to Beverley Sills and also to Offenbach's magical work.
The combination is a treat - for me made even better by the fact that the spoken dialogue which so often spoils other versions has been replaced by the sung recitatives composed for the premiere shortly after Offenbach's death.
Sills, who takes on all four of the libretto's weird and wonderful women, is in magnificent and huge voice. She is perfectly complemented by the excellent ensemble around her, Stuart Burrows being perhaps the most vulnerable and human Hoffmann so far; the remastering for Westminster Classics has given Julius Rudel's joyously theatrical recording a whole new lease of life.
Enjoy!

Music : Anne Sofie Von Otter Sings Offenbach
I like this disc a lot. I've always found Offenbach to have an infectious quality, and can listen to Orphée aux enfers or Les Contes d'Hoffmann repeatedly without getting bored. This disc presents a lot of Offenbach rarities and is an absolute delight. A lot of the excerpts are from operettas and operas only the titles of which are familiar, such as Madame l'Archiduc, Lischen et Fritzchen and Barbe-Bleue. As the booklet says, Offenbach wasn't just one of the greatest entertainers of the nineteenth-century, he was one of the greatest composers too, and this lack of representation in the catalogue is a real shame. But thankfully it is improving: Marc Minkowsky has now recorded with Les Musiciens du Louvre La Belle Hélène (along with Laurent Naouri who appears on this ... Read More:
