I came to Amazon.co.uk to look for a replacement CD of "Adventure!" as a replacement for my old tape copy (EMI-Columbia TC-SCX 6091). This was published in 1966 and contains many instantly recognisable film themes and other tunes. From the bombascity of the themes to "633 Squadron" and "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines", to the tranquil sobriety of "Girl with a Dream" and "Under the Linden Tree", the album provides a perfect aural backdrop for a leisurely journey through the joyous and serene. I have to confess I am not a classical music buff and know only the most commercialised of the pieces - which comprises quite a large section of this CD. However there were a few new pieces that I had not heard before and Nulla in Mundo pax Sincera is one of the most beautifl classical opera pieces that I have ever heard. Perhaps this CD will not appeal to true classical enthusiasts, but if you are, like me, looking to expand your Classical collection with something both safe (in that you have heard of some of the pieces) and slightly groundbreaking (some of the pieces although popular are still relatively new to most non classical music officianados) then this is a good choice.

Record catalogues in the 1930s contained a rich selection of Viennese operetta excerpts. Peter Dempsey has assembled 20 of them on this invaluable CD, has provided authoritative notes, and somehow contrived to bring them to us in better sound than I have ever heard them before. It is wonderful to have the original balance and individual acoustics preserved, while having all the surface noise wiped off. You will hear the sweet-voiced Charles Kullman in Johann Strauss firstly, complete with backing chorus and a thrilling high C at the end of his Zigeunerbaron aria. Elisabeth Schumann whoops and trills and whistles her way through two excerpts, and Richard Tauber shares the microphone with a schmalzy violin and throbbing zither in ... Read More:

This is my favourite of all Lesley Garrett's albums. It may be ten years old, originally released in 1998 but, it shows Lesley Garrett at her ultimate best. I know it sounds a bit of a cliche, but everything about this album is, in my view perfect. The repetoire chosen is well chosen and performed. My personal favourites include: Puccini's "Vissi D'Arte; Dvorak's "Songs My Mother Taught Me"; "In Quelle Trine Morbide" (Puccini); and "The Impossible Dream" (From "The Man of La Mancha"). All tracks are exquistly performed by Lesley Garrett, from a vocal point of view. I would heartily, recommend this album to anyone.
