It is remarkable and a great shame that these lovely works are not better known. I cannot recall seeing any of them programmed in London over the last twenty years (I may have missed one - probably the 4th if any). Haven't we had enough of the interminable Brahms, Tchaikovsy, Beethoven? (well, maybe not enough - but come on! How many Pastorals or Pathetiques do we need a month?) Parry is firmly within the great German Romantic tradition, but with a distinctive English sound world, one of long-breathed melodies and noble, rich sonorities. It's not a surprise to read in the informative notes that Elgar considered Parry to be an inspiration. The 'English' is a very fine work, as is the 'Cambridge', both highly expressive and very moving. The 4th ... Read More:

Simply the finest recording of Parry's cathedral music. Roger Judd's playing is exemplary - supportive and strong whilst never over-shadowing the choral sound. Dr Robinson's tempi and dynamics are always spot on, and the choral sound itself, both soloists and as ensemble could not be bettered.

Amongst a collection of 1000-plus choral CDs, this ranks amongst the top 10.

Music : Parry, J - Blodwen
Whilethis can't be claimed as a lost-masterpiece, it's interesting to hear the first welsh language opera. Musically, the style ranges from some Rossini like cabalettas in Act 1 to a moving Donizettian funeral march in Act 3, the whole piece ending with a fugue into which snatches of "Men of Harlech" are interwoven.

Dramatically the work is flawed, certainly not helped in this case by the fact that while a libretto in Welsh only is provided, no stage directions are given and only a basic synopsis given - this could lead to some confusion to non-welsh speakers, particularly where mutations are involved for example, Blodwen is variously called Blodwen, Mhlodwen and Flodwen.

The singing is ok but if this piece were to be resurrected ... Read More:

It was Parry's great misfortune to be composing at the same time as Elgar, both composers who (like many others in the late 19th-century) were profoundly influenced by the music of Brahms. The 5 symphonies are a delight, the last 3 undeserving of their present neglect. The 3rd (the 'English') is full of memorable tunes, the 5th a fine conclusion to Parry's symphonic utterances. The 4th is the marvel of the set: a deeply serious symphony, far and away his best. The first movement is powerful and weighty, with a dark coda, equal in emotional depth to any Elgar first movement. Parry was a keen sailor and the brisk scherzo feels like a yacht scudding along on a light breeze. The finale is powerful and ends in triumph. Full of memorable tunes, Parry's 4th is a neglected ... Hubert Parry was a family friend of the Boults', so Sir Adrian knew him from childhood. In his professional life later on, Boult had great sympathy for Parry's music, long neglected in the 20th. century, and his last commercial recording was of Parry. It gave him particular pleasure that that LP entered the classical best-seller lists at the time. This CD comes largely from an earlier Lyrita CD on which, I think, the performances are even better. The 'Symphonic Variations' is a really fine piece, taut, dramatic and building to a very fine major-key climax (from a minor-key theme). Likewise the 'Overture'. The two suites are very attractive, though in places a little run-of-the-mill, but they are performed with just as much conviction as the more symphonic pieces. The LSO's ... Read More:
