Pfitzner's music has suffered, quite understandably, because of his association with the Nazi regime (although composers who flourished under Stalin don't seem to suffer the same neglect). But this great cantata was composed many years before the rise of the Nazis, and it is nothing like the kind of Nuremberg Rally/Triumph of the Will pompous celebration that its title might suggest.

Instead it is a haunting, dream-like work of often delicate poetry, beautifully written for both voices and orchestra. There is nothing quite like it, though perhaps other neglected masterpieces like Zemlinsky's 'Lyric Symphony' or Schreker's opera 'Der Ferne Klang' come closest.

This is a good recording of a fine live performance, and ... Read More:

Music : Pfitzner: Palestrina
Palestrina was an opera that fascinated me long before I heard it. From all I'd read, it seemed to be one of a select group of operas, dealing with the actual process of artistic creation (Benvenuto Cellini, Die Meistersinger, Mathis der Mahler, Death in Venice to name but a few).
