This as hands down one of the most astonishing recordings I have ever heard. I bought it knowing a bit about tango, and a bit about Piazzolla, but regardless of that, this is incredible music. The music itself is gorgeous - dark, beautiful, ominous, brooding and deeply passionate. The playing is beyond compare - laser precise and yet at the same time gritty and rough. This is very much a band effort, and what a band - they swing, caress and whip up thunder.

Apparently this angered the tango purists in Argentina, as did much of Piazzollas output, and I can see why - this is modern, vital music, with clear influences from jazz, classical music and even the rush of punk. I must emphasise that you do not need to know much about ... Read More:

Immediately after the release of this Cd Gidon Kremer gave a concert in Royal festival hall & brought the audience to their feet on a number of occasions. he next time he gave a concert a few years later he brought the audience to their knees with despair. his Cd however has the most superb collection of Piazzollas music & a Russian or Polish piece which rarely appears on tango CDs, to my knowledge only 3 times, which is great music to dance to. I absolutely love this CD and highly recommend it.

Gidon Kremer has long championed the dancehall/whorehouse music of Astor Piazzolla, and in this disc he combines this (guilty?) pleasure with another of his hobbies, the creation of clever combinations of very different types of music. In this disc, he interweaves Vivaldi's Four Seasons with Piazzolla's to superb effect. The result casts Vivaldi's music in a new light, while persuasively demonstrating that Piazzolla's music is most definitely contemporary classical, as worthy of serious consideration as that of John Adams, Philip Glass or Gavin Bryars.

Kremer and his house band, Kremerata Baltica, deliver brilliant performances, and the recordings are faultless. A surprising gem of a disc, and one that could push you toward other music ... Read More:

This DVD contains an extended (106 minute) version of Mike Dibb's biographical documentary "Tango Maestro" about Astor Piazzolla that was recently broadcast. It features a string of insightful interviews with important people from his personal and/or musical life, including his children, his second wife Laura, lover and singer Amelita Baltar, French accordeonist Richard Galliano, vibe man Gary Burton, several sidemen from Piazzolla's ensembles and many more. Strange to say, the maestro himself delivers his lines in the goodfellows English that he learnt in New York's Little Italy in the twenties and thirties. The film does a good job of outlining Piazzolla's musical development and career and is graced by some pretty rare footage. This includes a fragment ... Read More:

I was recently shocked to read an article on the Kronos quartet that described their work as "beautifully recorded trivia". Some of the composers here are (certainly to my fairly ignorant mind) less than household names (well, would you expect "Benshoof" or "Gubaidulina" to come up often as answers in pub quizzes?) However, you'd have to be pretty darn heavyweight yourself to describe Arvo Part, Schnittke Lutoslawski and Gorecki as "trivial".

So, a tremendous introduction to the work of the Kronos quartet, and a brilliant sampler of 20th century music. Buy it if those nice Amazonian folks can rustle up a copy.
