Some of von Karajan's late 70s recordings for DG are simply stunning in every regard and the 2/3 of the Roman Trilogy on offer are a match for anything more recent. To be fair, they rather overshadow the others morsels on this CD, but I for one have no interest in the sneering sometimes directed at this full strings version of Albinoni's - or should that be Giazotto's - Adagio. It certainly carries more emotion at this temperature and tempo, being little more than a trifle if done 'authentically'.

If you can live without Roman festivals, this is the one to get. Karajan fans will already know what to do.

This is wonderfully vivid and glorious recording of the both works and definitely one of the finest stereo recordings by Reiner/Chicago SO. The gorgeous orchestral colours and vitality in their playing is incomparable to today's correct yet very dull performances of the same pieces.

Despite many Naxos recordings being high quality and good value for money, this recording seems to be the exception. The orchestra does not play well under Enrique Batiz in many of the louder sections (particularly in Roman Festivals), although in the quieter sections there is some very expressive solo playing (for example in the Pines of the Janiculum). When the player do manage to play together, the melody is ofter masked by unsubtle playing of Respighi's fine orchestrations. The percussionists seem to be in a world of their own. I am amazed that the recording hasn't been edited better as there are some very messy seams between takes. I really would not recommend this recording - try Antonio Pappano for more flair and accuracy - worth a few extra ... Read More:

Antal Dorati, Ottorino Respighi's music and I go back a long way, all the way to Dorati's mid-50s Mercury Living Presence monophonic LP of Respighi's first two parts of his Roman Trilogy ("The Fountains of Rome" and "The Pines of Rome") with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. Over time, I managed to collect all of Dorati's Respighi (adding up to a total of 4 albums), first on mono LP and then on stereo LP, up to and including this Philharmonia Hungarica performance of the full suite of "Ancient Dances and Airs for Lute" (by this time, in stereo only).

For reasons that escape me (probably a temporary change in musical tastes in the interim), I hadn't yet duplicated any of these on CD when they were released on this medium. For this particular ... Read More:
