It is hard to imagine a more sympathetic, nor indeed high spirited, homage to Saint-Saens than this marvellous recording. All five of the piano concertos have something to recommend them and I am glad that they are finally being appreciated on their own grounds. Long neglected, Concertos 1, 3, 4 and 5 are marvellous pieces, full of fun, elegance and poise. The recording itself is in a real class of its own, and this is a very worthy 'sister' of Hough's recent recording of Rachmaninoff's concertos.

Also present here are some smaller pieces, a little like Mozart's one movement rondos. Here, as in the Concertos, Mozart's presence can be felt. However it is the synthesis of Mozart's light orchestration and masterful musical development ... Read More:

What a wonderful collection this is. Anyone with any taste whatsoever in classical music (and plenty who don't) will realise when they listen to this that it is truely a masterpiece. The title track (Danse Macabre) is probably best known (in the UK at least) for being the title music to the BBC series "Jonathan Creek", and has also been featured in an episode of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", showing that it has an ability to grip and excite even those with no classical interest. This collection makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, it has that kind of power.

If you buy any classical album ever, this would be a fantastic choice - I can not praise this work high enough.

This is a great value CD, with three excellent versions of classic works by great composers. I have lost my copy of this and am purchasing a replacement - I have spent ages looking for this recording as I was so pleased with it originally.

Recently I gave a talk on Saint Saens at my local music society and played several extracts of his music all of which were taken from this CD. I have other recording of some of the tracks but those on this cd are better especially those that are conducted by Charles Dutoit. Kyung-Wha Chung the violin soloist in the violin concerto is also of a terrific standard and gives a performance saint saens would be proud of. I would highly recommend this CD to you.

This has to be one of the most exhilarating pieces of music ever written. The first two movements are slow and very pleasant, but it is the third and fourth that really grab your attention. The highpoint of the symphony is the fourth movement, with its powerful organ part. This needs to be played at high volume, and not when youa re driving as you will find yourself bashing away at imaginary kettle drums as it plays!!

The symphony is known in our house as Saint Saens Kettle Drum Symphony as there are almost as much kettle drums in the piece as organ!! We play it regularly.

Also on the CD is The Sorcerer's Apprentice. I'm no expert, but the rendition of this doesn't sound quite as exciting as the one on another recording I have. If you don't ... Read More:

Whether you have just discovered the wonderful Organ Symphony or have loved it for ages, this is a recording not to be missed. Eugene Ormandy recorded this work with the Philadelphia Orchestra probably more times (at least four) than any other great conductor and is arguably one of its greatest exponents.

All of the recordings are superb but, although this one (Sony SBK 47655)was recorded back in 1962, I feel that it has the edge for several reasons: 1) You feel that the musicians are really enjoying themselves, such is the relish with which they all play; 2) the Aeolian-Skinner organ at the Philadelphia Academy of Music (where the work was recorded) must be one of the most magnificent-sounding organs in the world; 3) the organ playing of Edward Power ...
