It is unquestionably a symptom of cultural decline that music played by orchestras, one of the most sophisticated art-forms devised by humans, becomes progressively marginalised year on year. The very term 'classical' music is anathematic to me, signifying as it does blind reverence to a tradition whose values bare no resemblance to our own modernity. I am not saying that the tradition does not have relevance. Bach and Beethoven are as Gods to me, for what they have to say about eternity. But due to various accidents of history, poor taste and judgement, and most of all intellectual egotism, on behalf of the composing 'fraternity', the listening public have decided that pretty well evrything after the first world war, the cataclysm that commenced ... Simpson initiates will know roughly what to expect: this music zings with explosive energy, yet is as rigorously structured as any; it abounds with Beethovenian springing rhythms and there are the usual faint echos of Nielson, yet all influences are fused in a distinctive, coherent compositional voice. Easy listening it certainly isn't; it's easy to forget just how abrasive Simpson's music can sound on a first hearing. The music demands attention and sometimes shouts in order to get it, and you may initially find this stridency exhausting. However, devote a little time to this recording and exhaustion will quickly be replaced by exhilaration. A suberb album of the composer Tomkins, I needed the reference for a piano duet exam and this cd has a superb interpretation of the music. A lovely performance and one I play a lot because I like that period of music.
