This CD marks the beginning of what has been become one of major treasures in the Naxos storehouse, the harpsichord sonatas of Padre Soler. Vol 1 is a representative cross-section of works by a composer who has until recently been regarded as a mere imitator of Domenico Scarlatti. The sheer variety of Soler's invention is breath-taking; the piquancy of his Spanish rhythms, and often unexpected shifts in key and chromaticism never fail to surprise. And his music is consistently interesting. Soler never wrote a dull sonata - you can't say that about his older contemporary, Scarlatti. The sonatas in Vol 1 (as in later vols) are excellently played by Gilbert Rowland who provides informative notes on each of these works. ... Read More:

Besides, these sonatas were composed specifically for harpsichord, not for piano where many performers play them. What do you think if I play Chopin in a clavichord? Mr. Rowland offers a very correct performance of Soler's works, with an appropiate instrument and a nice style, not only in this recording but also in the rest of the collection.

Dashing, engaging and brilliant works for harpsichord. Listening to this eighth installment of Gilbert Rowland's complete survey of Soler's keyboard sonatas, I regretted that it was not possible to watch as well as listen to them being played. Seeing the various hand-crossings, some at a distance of four and a half octaves, as well as the transference of hands between the two manuals, would be as fascinating for the observer as it must be difficult for the player. Gilbert Rowland provides a 76 minute selection of sonatas here, including one that is in rondo form, and one that comprises four movements. He also provides extensive program notes. He plays a two manual Wooderson 1998 harpsichord replicating a Goermans 1750 original. ... Read More:
