While not all your favourite G&S tunes have been captured here, this double CD collection certainly represents a fine selection of the duo's best ditties taken from their D'Oyly Carte repertoire and therefore good value for money. The performances are goodish, with one or two slightly below par.

This high quality production of songs recorded between 1961 and 73 emphasises clear vocal enunciation to allow the listener to enjoy Gilbert's witty libretto, slightly at the expense of the slightly muted orchestral sound. Still, credit to Decca for this release, which may help to restore their reputation and open the world of opera bouffe to a new generation.

Music : Operas of Gilbert and Sullivan (D'Oyly Carte Opera Company)
I agree wholeheartedly with the review by J.J.Rhodes, but feel I should make the point that the whole set is recorded in full glorious MONO! Once you have got over the shock of the sound stage collapsing into a point source however, the music really is delightful, and takes me back to the days when I used to pay 9d to sit up in the gods at the Golders Green Hippodrome to hear the D'Oyly Carte company sing their way through all those charming numbers. This set has a distinctly dated feel about it, and makes one realise just how much performing styles, as well as recording techniques, have changed in half a century (and some of the artists were clearly chosen for their ability to act rather than their ability to sing!). But for all that, I'm glad ... Read More:

What a lovely change to have a recording with the dialogue. This is the recording I grew up with, on vinyl, and it's nice to have my own copy on cd. All the singers on here are excellent, but the recording is worth buying just for Valerie Masterson's Mabel - a definitive performance of the role.

This recording from 1973 was made to celebrate 21 years of John Reed in the company. Musically it is conducted with flair and some enlightening passages. Roysten Nash produces subtle elements of Sullivan's score. The principals without exception are all past their prime and cannot match the later Telemarc version. To find the best Mikado, try and find the 1957 recording with Donald adams, Thomas Round, Jean Hindmarsh and Peter Pratt, it can be found!! brilliantly refurbished onto CD. That is and was D'Oyly Carte at their best. There is also the 1957 Pirates available! Happy hunting.

I'd like to echo the other positive reviews for this recording - it really is superb. I'd have given it 4.5 stars because it's just ever so slightly marred by missing a few bits. But listening to it while I write, I just feel it's such a delight to listen it gets the full five stars!!!

Rarely has there been a more perfect D'Oyly Carte recording of a G&S operetta than this early stereo recording of HMS Pinafore.

The cast on this recording is the best overall captured on record, and it would be hard to imagine a better performance by specialists as this. This recording is notable for introducing John Reed to the G&S circuit, and he turns in a fabulous performance as the Ruler of the Queen's Navee. I think that Reed sounds at his best in his earlier recordings, as his portrayals were all balanced without the mannerisms that crept into his later performances. Jeffrey Skitch makes a firm, strong first-class Captain, who delivers marvellous timing, and relishes the part. Not only is he authoritative and commanding in his opening ... Read More:
