This is a very interesting and enjoyable History of Classical Music on four CDs. It contains excerpts from over 50 pieces of Western Music. I have read some musical history before but I found that this set of CDs dealt more thoroughly with the thousand years of development from around 600 AD to around 1600 AD. I ordered these CD's on the 30th of May. I have had an e-mail today 21st June to say they cannot get hold of them so have cancelled my order, yet they are still advertising that they have 2 copies for sale! What dreadful customer service!

I drive about an hour each day and wanted something that I could use in the car. Unlike the previous reviewer, I find the sound is absolutely fine. There is an option to have French played on one speaker and English on the other but I reckon it is best on normal stereo. I liked the CD so much, I bought the 2nd and 3rd series. These are not quite as good as the speaker hesitates before saying whether polite or familiar forms are to be used. Also, all are slightly "American" in terms of English phraseology but not too bad. It is a very good way to learn good diction and vocabulary but you really need other material, eg writing and speaking to learn properly. J.K Rowling not only astounds us with another great instalment in the Harry Potter saga, but Stephen Fry mesmorises us with his fabulous reading, again! Fry is the perfect narrator to this wonderful audio cassette. He brings the charcters to life, and turns the story into a living dream! He even manages to scare you with the "headless voice" (embaressing to admit, but its true). Though i did not enjoy the book as much as the others, this audio cassette is absoloutly fantastic, and i go to sleep listening to it many a night! An absoloutly worthwhile investment, especially if you haven't the patience to keep reading the books!

The problem suffered by the Harry Potter 'Saga' isn't that they are particularly poorly written books, nor that they are better or worse than 90% of the mush that counts for children's literature. The problem is that they are not loved because of the stories but simply because they are read. What I mean is, before Harry Potter came along, many of my friends, relatives and aquaintances didn't really read anything. They bought in to the media hype about these books and so decided to give them a go, unfortunately they have mistaken a love of reading with the love of what they've read. These same friends and aquaintances have to this day read nothing other than Mr Potter, they see it as the be all and end all of literature, which is sad really. ... Read More:

Perhaps, like me, you're not an avid reader of the fantasy genre. However, anyone who respects good writing should have read Lord of the Rings. LOTR is a contemporary classic and deserves respect as a great novel. So, as other reviewers have said, this audio drama cannot replace the book; it does, however, supplement the book wonderfully and bring Middle-Earth to life. I don't envy the actors in the forthcoming films the prospect of trying to follow this production. Iam Holm steals the show, William Nighy (such an under-rated actor) adds wonderful comic relief, the late Robert Stephens gives a powerful performance which I can only compare to Burton's best and Michael Hordern and Peter Woodthorpe ARE Gandalf and Gollum.
