These are three classic, timeless, almost historical (1963 and 1965) recordings of Elgar's works by three great champions of the composer - conductor Sir John Barbirolli, Jacqueline du Pre and Dame Janet Baker, and full credit to EMI too for preserving and continually remarketing these great recordings.

However, great as the recordings are, they are all included in the EMI Classsics 5CD set `Elgar Orchestral Works' which also has the complete Enigma Variations, Symphonies 1 and 2, and all the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, so my recommendation has to be that set rather than this single disc offering.

Of all Elgar recordings by Du Pre, this live recording is no doubt the most deeply moving one. The slow movement is probably the slowest interpretation, yet it never loses tension as she gives everything to express the heart-breakingly poignant Elgarian longing. Despite the almost fierce outpouring of emotion, this performance never gives an impression of vulgar sentimentalism, as the sheer depth of music making transcends everything else!

Barenboim's account of Enigma is equally great recording. No over-emotionality here, yet full of grace, magical moments and noble beauty presented in Wagnerian grandeur. The famous Nimrod is played most beautifully.

These are two wonderful recordings, both from the 1960's, and have rarely been beaten, in terms of passion and emotion, after more than 40 years of performances by other artists.

Jacqueline du Pre's Elgar cello concerto from 1965 remains the benchmark for this work and essential listening for lovers of classical music.

EMI have released this recording in many guises since its original performance, most recently on the 'Complete EMI Recordings' 17 CD box set of du Pre's works, which does offer better value so is my recommended version to buy.

A simply timeless performance.

You should definitely consider getting this if you already have the studio recording made by these artists for EMI, a year or two earlier. If you don't own either, I say get this one. For one thing, you'll be showing some wisdom in choosing Du Pre - the most celebrated Elgar cellist - but you won't quite be following the crowd who all bought the studio effort and promptly declared it incomparable.

This live recording from Prague is, for me (a late convert to Du Pre's art) a more emotionally engaging document than the studio recording. Sometimes the orchestral accompaniment is mightily (effectively) emphatic but one comes back to the great sensitivity of the soloist. Recorded sound is wholly acceptable.

About 13 years ago, Natalie Clein won the BBC Young Musician of the year with a memorable performance of the Elgar. She has lived with it some years now and this recording is no disappointment. It is a wonderfully sombre reading of the piece that Elgar intended as a requiem to the dea of the First World War. More restrained than Du Pre's wonderful version, I wonder if it didn't hit an even deeper note at times. But comparisons are odious. Both have great music making to enjoy. One slight disappointment is in the fairly meare fill-up of salon pieces. Would have liked to hear Clein in another concerto. But this record also acts as a memorial to the fine British conductor, the late Tod Handley, so that's another reason for buying it.

As its title states, this 1965 LSO/Barbirolli recording of du Pre's deeply emotional and passionate account of the Elgar cello concerto remains the definitive version, and has been continually available since its 1960's release, after more than four decades.

The recording is now found on many EMI collections and box sets, and for that reason I would recommend one of these alternative versions as they usually offer better value. For du Pre fans there is the `Jacqueline du Pre Complete EMI Recordings' 17 CD box set, and for the Elgar fan there is the 5CD set `Elgar Orchestral Works' (also including the Janet Baker Sea Pictures) on the EMI Classics label.

A truly historic performance, essential to everyone's collection. ... Read More:
