This series, produced by EMI in the days of LPs, is one of the great achievements of the gramophone - they rightfully belong up there with the Decca Ring, the EMI Callas series, and any other candidates you care to name. Together they provide a truly comprehensive survey of singing right through the age of recording up to the early days of the LP. Sadly, to the best of my knowledge, only Volumes 3 & 4 have appeared on CD - the very earliest era of recording and the period up to the introduction of electrical recording methods that were originally on Volumes 1 and 2 really deserve to be heard again. An incredible collection of Italian Baroque Sacred music, including an unjustly neglected masterpiece by Antonio Maria Bononcini (1677-1726). The Stabat Mater for SATB, chorus, strings and continuo of Giovanni Bononcinis less famous brother surely deserves more recognition, as does Antonio Maria Bononcini. A must for Baroque music lovers.

First let me get the negatives off my chest: this CD is really difficult to find in any physical shop. The problem for the retailer is this: where to file it? The CD is by 'The Dowland Project', yet it contains no songs by John Dowland. The composers contributing the most songs to the album are the not-very-well-known Cipriano da Rore and Robert Johnson (not the blues guitarist!). The convention with classical CDs is to file by composer, so this CD gets lost in the enormous 'Various Artists' category. Alternatively you can file the CD by star performer, but there again, ECM has created a problem for the CD-buying public: the only performer listed on the cover of this CD is John Potter, but I suspect the contributing artist who pulls in most ECM ... This is a glorious collection of songs and ballads, beautifully sung by Thomas Allen. I bought this for my mother- for whom it brought back countless memories- but was surprised at just how many of these songs also conjured up happy childhood memories for me. Really well-worth listening to.
