love every track on here... great way to spend a morning with a coffee this and some of mother nature's finest

This recording is an essential addition to any serious Jazz collection, capturing as it does five Jazz giants recorded together for the one and only time.

Charlie Parker is on Alto Sax, Dizzy Gillespie Trumpet, Bud Powell Piano, Charles Mingus bass and Max Roach on drums. From the first number "Perdido" you know this something special. A medium tempo version which never stops swinging. Gillespie in particular is in fiery form on this number. On "Salt Peanuts" Bud Powell plays a memorable solo, which precedes a thunderous drum solo from Max Roach.

The atmosphere is fantastic with the crowd applauding the musicians solos, and sometimes you can hear the musicians cajoaling each other to better performances.

This is a very heavy hard bop album and is well worth a listen. It is a concious offering and is very dark in places. There are several sections where Max and Abbey Lincoln get to stretch out on their own and the dynamics and interaction between the two musicians is sublime. The opening track (driva' Man) sets the scene with Abbey Lincoln singing from the perspective of a slave and her relationship with the slave driver. Colman Hawkins is on fire, playing a solo full of soul and lyricism. Freedom Day is a hectic hard bop offering delivered in triple time and again shows Mr Roach's melodic style. Triptych is a piece that is on the more experimental tip where Abbey Lincoln expresses the feeling of a generation dealing with the ... Read More:

These 'Live in Greenwich Village' performances covering the period 1965-67 are some of the most passionate and emotional in all of jazz and is arguably Albert Ayler's finest hour(or two!)
Someone once described this music as sounding like "a Salvation Army band on LSD" and it's certainly a potent mixture of childlike themes, New Orleans marching tunes, collective free-for-alls and Ayler's blistering saxophone.
A highlight for me is the Village Vanguard 1966 recording of 'Angels' which is Ayler's impassioned, intensely moving and melodious duet with a pianist who's probably Call Cobbs Jr.
Anyone wanting just one example of Albert Ayler in their collection need look no further than this magnificent double CD which contains astonishingly ... Read More:

While he might not be a household name, Clifford Brown was - I believe - one of the best jazz trumpeters ever to have played, up there with the likes of Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan, players people are inclined to make much more noise about, but none of whom, I don't think, ever surpassed Brown's charismatic and joyful sound.

After Brown died in a car crash at the age of only 27, Dizzy Gillespie went as far as to describe the day as a fatal blow for jazz. It's understandable why Gillespie felt this way - Brown was not only a virtuouso player, he had incredible soul and subtlety, as well as stunning speed and style. Add to that that he was also a composer in his own right, with a very distinctive quality to his work. ... Read More:

8.Speak, Brother, Speak! by: Max Roach
July 01, 1991
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Speak, Brother, Speak!
This is a meaty chunk of Max Roach - 2 tracks, 4 musicians and 40 minutes of pure joy. The music - each track hits the 20 minute mark - is a swirling dervish where hard-bop crashed headlong into free-form jazz. Although the blues structure to the pieces remains fairly constant, the driving force of Roach's drumming keeps the music on the boil. Eddie Kahn on bass, Mal Waldron on piano and Clifford Jordan on tenor sax make up the rest of the band. Always worth returning to.
