History has been singularly unfair to Andrew Hill. He released several albums during the 1960s, but quickly thereafter faded into obscurity when he found no more funding to produce more records. However, this one disc is enough to mark him as a bandleader of great originality and imagination, and a composer of rare talent.

The band itself is very similar to that which recorded Eric Dolphy's masterpiece "Out to Lunch", but this session is by no means a simple rehash of those principles. The compositions are as far removed from Tin Pan Alley as Dolphy's, but they seem more immediately cohesive, and (though this be sacreligous to say as much), less wearing on the ear. The playing is terrific througout, especially from the ... Read More:

5 stars, and still underrated, because this is the greatest achievement by a piano trio since Bill Evans' Village Vanguard recordings. And no, I am neither drunk nor insane.

Bill Evans re-invented the piano trio, in fact, the small jazz ensemble, by adopting the principles of classical chamber music. Up to Evans, a jazz piano trio was a piano playing over a rhythm set by drums and bass. Listen to a Mozart piano trio, and you'll see how things could be (and were) done differently. In chamber music, the instruments communicate. The musical whole is created by all three (four, five...) instruments together. Bill Evans, Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian transferred that to the jazz idiom and things were never the same, afterwards.

I take a midnight stroll through the deserted streets of Paris. In an alleyway I come across a masked figure wearing a dinner suit who invites me into the door at the end. Inside smoke washes the walls, performing elaborate pirouettes and dissolving into the air. Beyond that I hear the faint sounds of a piano being played and find myself drawn towards the simple melody.

Pushing back a heavy red curtain, I step into a small hall. In front of me is a stage with a large grand piano. Playing that piano is another masked figure in a long dark green gown. Scattered throughout the space are several more masked figures sitting separately at small circular tables. The majority of them are holding long cigarette holders and exhaling with dreamy ... a surprisingly accessible & well-produced set, from a disciplined & swinging outfit. very effective deployment of baritone sax, thoughtful & enjoyable arrangements & good melodies should appeal to listeners well outside the reach of sun ra's usual "far out" reputation.

a richly textured and rewarding treat. try it!

Music : Greatest Hits: Easy Listening for Intergalactic Travel
This 78-minute CD is an ideal entry-point into Sun Ra's astonishing and expansive catalogue numbering around 200 albums.
There are 18 tracks arranged in chronological order and drawn from Sun Ra's Saturn label with the exception of 'We Will Wait For You' recorded for the film 'Space Is The Place'. It's fascinating to hear how Sun Ra's music evolved over the period 1956-73.
Sun Ra's 'Greatest Hits'(which probably reached the charts only on Saturn!) should suffice for anyone who wants just one CD of this remarkable composer and bandleader in their collection, but it's also a perfect launching pad for those who want to explore further.

It's sulphuric rivers on far away planets, shooting stars darting across the stratosphere, our minds bent to see and hear other things.
Ra's Languidy conjures up so many images, so many foreign emotions as it slowly tip-toes along, creeping under your skin.
"Where pathways meet," is where things come alive, a jumping tumult, all behind that croaking beat laid down by the sax. There's chance far all types of fun and games, plenty of sneaky witchcraft on the guitar.
"That's how I feel," is a so wonderfully lonesome, its baseline insipid, enternal. The whole record fit together nicely with the vocal on the languorious,"There are no other worlds."
A relative newcomer to Sun Ra's music I chose this as a starting point having ... Read More:

There is little to add to Klingsor Tristan's review, except that I wholeheartedly concur - this is wonderful, sensitive playing of fine arrangements. The recording is good, the atmosphere invigorating, and my feeling as I listen through this disc is a growing sense of joy, culminating with a deeply moving Lohengrin overture. Wonderful.

It's great that reviewer "beenykleesox" likes Ra's album, although he must be mistaken about seeing Sun Ra himself in 2001. Sun Ra "went back to Saturn" (died) in 1993! Maybe it was the band under the direction of Marshall Allen . . . .?
