This is the first of a series of recording made by Pass beginning in 1973, and it features him in masterful, powerful form. His formidable technique is simply stunning - he effectively accompanies himself, creating incredible richness with full chord backing and harmonic basslines, over which he simultaneously plays a free and beautifully phrased melody line - musically it is almost impossible to imagine that only one man is playing, and with absolutely no overdubbing! This is the ultimate jazz guitar album, it does'nt need analyzing, its the bench mark, Joe at his magnificent best, a fabulous tribute to Django. There will be other guitarists that can play the guitar with their feet, behind their head, whilst eating celery, so what? If I could have attained the standard on this album, I'd die a happy bunny.

This is the ultimate jazz guitar album, it does'nt need analyzing, its the bench mark, Joe at his magnificent best, a fabulous tribute to Django. Absolute perfection. Anyone who doesn't adore this record deserves to be taken out into the street and beaten like a gong.

I struggle to name an Oscar Peterson album that is better than this one. With NHOP on bass and Joe Pass on Guitar this is the most technically accomplished trio of Oscar Petersons career. As an example of how to play the blues you can do no better than listen to Chicago blues. This is stunning playing. The tempo is not particulary fast but Peterson burns up the keyboard, and it is more than just a lot of notes. There are some wonderful rhythmic nuances which keep what is a long piece (13:42) interesting. You could equate these nuances to gear changes. Interestingly you can get a sheet music transcription of Petersons first solo from Chicago blues. Its published in the marvellous volume of sheet music "Oscar Peterson Note for Note". ... Read More:

Then in the late 1960s he began to devote himself to classical music, and attained even greater fame as a conductor and as a classical pianist. This CD was made in 1989, when he was still busy with his conducting. He missed playing with jazz people, and wanted to return to his musical past. He hand-picked Joe Pass and Ray Brown to work with him for the first time. The result is a relaxed and swinging album.
