The great thing about Miles Davis was that his trumpet playing was so transcendent. He's probably the only jazz player whose albums frequently appear in top 100 rock lists. I fail to see how anyone could not take the lilting sentiments of 'Porgy & Bess' to heart no matter what your musical tastes.

The 'Buzzard Song' opens the album with a grooving bass line by Paul Chambers, cleverly imitated by a tuba that follows suit (how many albums have you heard with a grooving tuba?). Then the lyrical note changes of 'Bess, You Is My Woman', before one of the highlights of the album, 'Gone'. This is something of a departure from Gershwin's opera itself, but the backing players relish the opportunity for some pure jazz playing, topped off ... Read More:

This series, produced by EMI in the days of LPs, is one of the great achievements of the gramophone - they rightfully belong up there with the Decca Ring, the EMI Callas series, and any other candidates you care to name. Together they provide a truly comprehensive survey of singing right through the age of recording up to the early days of the LP. Sadly, to the best of my knowledge, only Volumes 3 & 4 have appeared on CD - the very earliest era of recording and the period up to the introduction of electrical recording methods that were originally on Volumes 1 and 2 really deserve to be heard again.

Volume 3, the collection under discussion here, covers the period from 1926-1939. This was a veritable Golden Age of Singing - in Wagner ... Read More:

I don't like jazz. I want to, but I don't. I bought this because it was mentioned in a book called iPod Therefore I Am. It was described as being a weird jazz arrangement by a 21 piece band with demented time signature changes. It sounded interesting so I took a flutter on it. And I'm pleased that I did.

To me it sounds like a combination of The Avengers TV theme and a plodding movie Western theme. I don't understand music so the time changes are invisible to me but I can hear the shifting dynamics. And the five trumpet players together make a unique sound.

Very strange, very '60's and quite enjoyable. At first I thought Indian Lady was by far and away the best track but Turkish Bath is now starting to sound even better.

The only thing I will regret in my life is not being able to see and hear this band live in person in London back in February 1972. I had the Decca Phase Four stereo 2 LP set and when I visited Brittan in 2005 I played them again but found the poor balance detracted from the thought of bringing them back with me to Australia and buying a turntable to play them again.
Now this is no longer necessary and it seems with no to do Michael Dutton has cleaned up the often very poor balance Decca went to press with. So much so those of you who have never heard the LP's will just think it's a bit closely miked but it seemed to me it was well over the top of the tape's dynamic range especially the very fiery numbers such as Peanut ... 6.Dirty Harry - The Original Score by Lalo Schifrin by: Original Soundtrack
June 07, 2004
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Dirty Harry - The Original Score by Lalo Schifrin
This is a cool collection of songs from the Dirty Harry films. There's only one dialoge in the album and it's that classic "do u feel lucky??" by Eastwood. Album opens with that and right after the dialogue we get right to the point. Warm rhodes, funky bass and drums with some dissonance stringchord we go to the "Main Theme" which is Lalo Schifrin in his best. The "Scorpios theme" is another killer with its human vocal line and groovy beat. There are also some disturbing stringwork and "suspense" music which does not hold up so well without its original concept. And when we get to the 80's stuff it's just seems that Schifrin has lost his way at some point. Plastic synthsounds and terrible sounding drum machines is more near to "Beverly Hills Cop" sound that ... Read More:

7.Tango - Original Soundtrack by: Original Soundtrack
July 05, 1999
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Tango - Original Soundtrack
A fantastic CD featuring absolutely the best instrumentalists of our time playing a superb choice of music. There are no bad ones and they all can be danced to, if you know how to dance. The musicians seem to have taken on board the uniqueness of the moment provided them by the greatest "dance" film maker of our time, Carlos Saura. They truely put their hearts into it particularly Horacio Salgan who at the age 80 or above plays with the urgency, enthusiasm and energy of a world champion downhill racer. Along a whole host of glittering names, you are given the opportunity to hear maestros Nestor Marconi at the bandoneon & Obaldo Leo et all.

8.The Complete Rca Victor Recordings 1937-1949 by: Dizzy Gillespie

Music : The Complete Rca Victor Recordings 1937-1949
Dizzy Gillespie's style was the nemesis of Miles Davis's. Introspection doesn't seem to have been a word often used in Diz's vocabulary, musical or otherwise. His playing did have a 'dizzying' effect always putting speed, dynamism and drama at the forefront of his performances. On this collection Gillespie's talent as a bandleader and musical arranger also come to the fore. He had of course a great theoretical knowledge of music and wasn't afraid to pass this on to other musicians by way of help and encouragement. With the big bands here he manages to register bebop lines in a larger sound and the over-all enthusiasm shows through.

Throughout this collection Gillespie never loses sight of the desire to swing despite his revolutionary tendacy to subvert ... Read More:

A remarkable live (therefore the odd buzz and balance issues) recording of a big band that under Ellis' direction broke every rule. they played the Hippy venues, wore denim and beads, and blew like they were as tripped out as the audience, expect oddness abound and give it at least 3 goes. High points are 1. An extended and highly improvised Hey Jude that would have had Lennon and Mc Cartney bewildered but I expect impressed. 2. Pussy wiggle stomp, bright as hell even decades later.
