When you're tired of just "the best of" and don't want to go to the trouble to collect the complete Glenn Miller, this is about the best collection on the market. I'm still surprised to find items like the childish "Booglie-Wooglie Piggy" or "the Kiss Polka" included in the set ("Sweeter than the Sweetest" and "At the President's Birthday Ball" come to mind as musically better alternatives), but all in all there's a good balance between the swinging Mr. Miller and the more commercial things he waxed.
I still find it incomprehensible that Miller employed such mediocre singers (Marion Hutton and Ray Eberle), who are only palatable when they are singing together with The Modernaires, and therefore I find it a pity that the 1937-1938 Decca ... Read More:

Music : Small World Big Band Vol.1
There have been quite a few bad reviews about this album, but having read them and still brought the album and listened to it myself, I'm not sure what they were listening to but I don't think it was this. I love this album, especially, Suggs, George Harrision, Mark Knopfler and J-Kay but not a single track disappoints. A really enjoyable album to relax to or dance to try it for yourself and make your own decision.

This is a great album to play in the car to de-stress those rush hour journeys. Also to play in the background when friends come over. The astounding trumpet playing will make you smile; it is happy, upbeat, and above all, very cool.

If the house ever burned down, this would be the one thing that I would rush in to save. Although some of these recordings are nearly 70 years old, the music is timeless. Without doubt, these recordings represent not only the apogee of the Count's recordings but the whole Swing Era. Featuring such legends as Lester Young, Buck Clayton, Sweets Edison and the famous "All American " rythmn section of Basie / Page / Greene / Jones, it is safe to say that there is not a duff track on this 4 CD box set. In addition, there are plenty of recordings by the great Jimmy Rushing - check out "Harvard Blue." What can surely be better than this track ?
Although superior transfers may be available and there are some notable omissions (the wonderful version ... Read More:

I'm 17 years of age, i'm into punk rock music, heavy/thrash metal music and I play electric guitar. So can someone please explain to me why I love this album sooooo much. Seriously, I never get bored of listening to the Benny Goodman Story. From start to finish all his best hits are crammed in for a night in, sitting down and relaxing and watching the t.v with the mute button on. My favourites are "And The Angels Sing", "One O'clock jump", "China boy", "Moonglow". Well let me face facts there all amazing tracks from the swing band general himself. (Also recommended if you like this is Glen Miller.)
I honestly love this C.D and if your thinking of buying this DO NOT HESITATE, it's a wonderful CD, and at ... Read More:

The death Of Billy Strayhorn was an incalculable loss, not only to the Duke Ellington Orchestra but to Jazz and Popular music as well. The Musical Chemistry between Ellington and Strayhorn, longtime musical collaboraters, has been well documented, Strayhorn selflessly allowing Ellington to take the credit for his own compositions on occassions. This Album was Duke and his Orchestra's personal tribute to the man who had contributed so many compositions to the band which ended ranging outwards and beyond to become recognised standards for Jazz musicians the world over. Take the A Train, Lush Life, Chelsea Bridge to name but a few. This Album is a fitting Tribute to the Genius of Strayhorn, and the Orchestra needless to say provide a performance that ... Read More:

Drum battles between Krupa and Rich were always exciting, but this has something more.It is not a battle, more a collaboration. Although both swing-based their styles are very different.Rich was an unleashed monster whose subtler touches were often overlooked, whilst Krupa was the most musical of drummers who also had a magic that made the simplest beat something special. The two drummers loved each other, and it shows on this album.Their individual tracks are great but Bernie's Tune is the killer.Free-flowing,inventive and exciting drumming leading in to great solos from the guys in the ensemble. When the other musicians kick in Krupa remains to back them and then Rich takes over for the final choruses. This section shows most markedly their two styles....Krupa ... Read More:
