Below is the review I recently posted on Amazon.com for the Dave Brubeck Take Five SACD. I really felt I should post the reveiw on Amazon.co.uk also, as there appear to be reviews which relate only to the CD release - same story with US Amazon. Surely there must be others out there that could stand up for this superb SACD album??!!

Although I'm not what I consider to be a great fan of jazz, I have enjoyed Dave Brubeck's music for quite some time. For the last two and a half years or so, I have bought almost only high resolution music (DVD-A or SACD), and was determined to buy this disc soon. For a short while, several years ago, I owned the standard CD version of this album - until I donated it to my father-in-law. For anyone reading ... Read More:

This gem is a lucid, intelligent and romantic twenty-track take on American standards which far surpasses expectations.

I got the album on the cheap, and the fact that no-one else on Amazon had reviewed it coupled with its absence in most jazz encyclopedias (supposedly not in the top tier of Shearing releases) made me think I'd acquired a cruise-ship easy listening CD full of filler... However, although some of the moods do lean towards cocktail music, this release is a studied and beautiful interpretation of the American songbook. I would liken this to third stream rather than easy listening - note Shearing's quotations of Rachmaninov and Satie - and would wholeheartedly recommend it to fans of Bill Evans and of romantic classical composers. ... I have listened to quite a few quality Jazz albums of late (including Art Blakey, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, etc.) but this one really is a masterpiece! The cover includes an interview with G.T. Simon, Jazz Commentator of the NY Herald Tribune at the time, and gives great insight into the special nature of that night. "Then suddenly it happened - right after the start of the third number. Don't ask why. Probably nobody can explain it. But it happened all right, and what had begun as quite a good Brubeck concert burst abruptly into a truly great one." The entire story is well worth the read. The musicians are not merely playing, they are preaching, and convincing, and so full of life and energy! It is almost impossible to interrupt a piece to go and ... Read More:

This Cd contains a wealth of Shearing magic.
If you want to chill out or just wantsome real "Dinner Jazz" for that special meal, then this is it!

Listen to "Laura" or "There's a Small Hotel" they are superb.

The Billy May arrangements contribute greatly and George Shearing's own are subtle.

Spoil yourself - you won't regret it.

Music : An Evening at...
If I was granted one chance to travel back in time, I'd be sitting in the audience at a Tormé/Shearing gig. I think the collection of Mel & George recordings on Concord should have a mention in any history of 20th century music. Two artists, and they really are artists, at the top of their game with boundless enthusiasm for 'The American Songbook'. One of the things I've always loved about these guys is that they seem unable to play one song at a time - one or two more usually sneak in and spotting the lines stolen from other songs is great fun. Of the half-dozen albums they made together, this is one of the more informal, and the recording quality is excellent. Every number is top-notch, but the opening mix of 'Just One of Those Things' and 'On Green Dolphin Street' ... Read More:

9.A Vintage Year by: Mel Torme and George Shearing
July 01, 1988
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : A Vintage Year
When Mel Torme and George Shearing, friends who recorded together often, performed at the Paul Masson Mountain Winery in 1987, each was at his peak. Torme was then sixty-two years old, but his voice had never been better--he never smoked (unusual in this industry), and his voice was mellow and mature, even better at sixty-two than it was at thirty-two. Shearing, at age sixty-eight, having signed with Concord Records in 1979, was enjoying a renaissance as a jazz pianist, making stunning recordings with Carmen McRae, Peggy Lee, and Mel Torme, among others.

In this vibrant live performance, both Torme and Shearing are relaxed, more interested in communicating with the audience and each other than in special effects and pyrotechnics. This approach is epitomized in ... Read More:
