Antonio Carlos Jobim goes down with Lennon/McCartney, Gershwin, Amstrong as one of the most influential songwriter/stylists of the 20th century.

To judge the album on its own merits is one thing. Getz turns in small but perfectly formed solos. Astrid Gilberto's voice is ravishing, complementing husband Joao's voice with that incredibly restrained vulnerability that is the essence of Bossa. It is an album of incredible tenderness and instrospection. The studio atmosphere is very intimate with an almost homespun quality. For me its a five star album in its own right.

However, this album has a far larger significance, in the way that Sargeant Pepper did. It changed everything and set off ripples that are still reverberating ... Read More:

Below is the review I recently posted on Amazon.com for the Dave Brubeck Take Five SACD. I really felt I should post the reveiw on Amazon.co.uk also, as there appear to be reviews which relate only to the CD release - same story with US Amazon. Surely there must be others out there that could stand up for this superb SACD album??!!

Although I'm not what I consider to be a great fan of jazz, I have enjoyed Dave Brubeck's music for quite some time. For the last two and a half years or so, I have bought almost only high resolution music (DVD-A or SACD), and was determined to buy this disc soon. For a short while, several years ago, I owned the standard CD version of this album - until I donated it to my father-in-law. For anyone reading this reveiw, ... Read More:

This music album was made in 1963 and it's totally timeless and as fresh in 2008 as when it was first made. I'm 43 and my dad is 70. My 8 year old son and all of us can't get enough of this. Getz's Chega De Saudade (One note samba) is totally the best jazz funk ever and all the other melodies are totally gold as well. You can buy this for yourslef or as a gift for a friend and it's totally priceless - worth a 100 times it's weight in gold. Enjoy!!!!

Every note is a pleasure and the experience of listening to a man so at one with his music is something rarely witnessed elsewhere. Narrowly edges "A Kind of Blue" for sheer class....

Massively recommended. These were Getz's final recordings, three months before his death. A duo performance is never easy. The increased workload must have put tremendous strain on his health but you would never know from listening to this exquisite live double CD. Fourteen tracks, culled from four consecutive nights at the Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen, show Getz at his most
majestic. The wonderful Kenny Barron on piano shows complete empathy with Getz, and the interplay between them is perfect. This is exemplified by the ballad 'First Song'. It is a total masterpiece.

I have always been a great fan of both Chet Baker and Paul Desmond as individually fantastic musicians. This album brings them together in what can only be described as remarkable circumstances. Chet was re-inventing himself after a spell in the musical wilderness following his brush with the drugs heavies and Paul was dying of lung cancer. That this recording was made at all is tribute to both men's fight with their personal tragedies. Paul Desmond died shortly after making the final tracks of this recording but to hear him play, who would know. The sidemen include the phenomenal Jim Hall on guitar (The CTI album "Jim Hall Concierto" is basically the same as "Together") Bob James on a (now) dated sounding electric piano, the great Ron Carter on bass and either Steve ... When I first heard these tracks back in the fifties they were too modern, too West Coast, beyond my understanding and yet now they seem like old friends. Gerry Mulligan was Pacific Jazz's first artist and thank goodness they were there to record this lot. The group only lasted eleven months during which time they recorded all but one of the tracks on this CD. The odd one "Festive Minor" was recorded five years later at a reunion and shows Baker a little more strident than previously.

All the old Mulligan favorites are on the CD and demonstrate the empathy that he and Baker had at the time. It is music of the fifties but worth reinvestigating in the 2000s.

This is small group jazz at its very best. After casting off the restraints of the bossa nova years and dabblings in popish fusion stuff, hear Getz doing what he does best - playing gorgeous tenor with some great sidemen. Stan really stretches out here - including a fast 'What Is This Thing Called Love'- but even though it was one of his last recordings, not much of the butter seems to have run out of his tone. He sounds irristable on the opening 'El Cahon' and all throughout the CD he weaves long flowing lines through and around the chords - a masterly show of phrasing. Mention should also be made of Kenny Barron and the rhythm section. They accompany Stan perfectly, diggin in or mellowing out accordingly. Barron further proves himself to be one the very best - funky and ... Read More:

It's hard to think of anyone who has a tone quite like Stan Getz: breathy yet rich, cool yet passionate, he was unique. Famous for his wonderful bossa nova recordings, he also made some great music with other jazz masters. This album with the Oscar Peterson Trio is particularly fine. Getz's warm, lyrical tone caresses a collection of great tunes with admirable collaboration from one of the finest trios of all time. The lack of a drummer allows an intimate, relaxed feeling to the proceedings, and the results are seriously enjoyable. Highlights include a swinging "Pennies From Heaven" and beautiful ballad work on "Detour Ahead" and "I'm Glad There Is You". All Getz fans and jazz lovers should investigate this CD without delay.
