It's the simpleness of his warm, infectious grooves that makes Horace Silver's music so enduring. The Bossa Nova infused title track is a typical example of his ability to pen catchy rhythms, "Song for my father," is notable for Joe Henderson's blazing solo and it remains one of those Blue Note signature tunes. Each track starts with a bass note and a single piano chord before gently building into a tumultuous ebb and flow. "Calcutta Cutie," has a slighly eerie, claustrophobic feel to it and it combines well with the snaking,"Que Pasa." The liner notes on this re-issued version give an interesting insight into the rag bag of musicians that Silver used in laying down the tracks. The rather lengthy recording time and the two quintets involved ... Read More:

From the very opening moments of these remarkable recordings, one is at once struck by the sense that a moment of historical importance is being witnessed all over again. Blue Note's Alfred Lion, in his unerring vision, decided to record Art Blakey's new band at Birdland in February 1954. He had rightly sensed that something new, something thrillingly new, was afoot. Though Charlie Parker was still a year from death, bop was demanding an invigorating lease of life to take it into a new dimension of expressiveness and vitality. The resulting transformation of the now hackneyed music into something raw, urgent and fizzing with energy was to be popularly called "hard bop", and was thrust into public consciousness on this record, and its sister ... This is possibly Horace Silver's best front line. Certainly he seems to have thought so and with good reason. Both the ensemble playing and the solos are sharp, in keeping with the tunes. In comparison to Horace Silver's earlier and later groups I much prefer Blue Mitchell to Kenny Dorham and Junior Cook to Joe Henderson, not forgettting Louis Hayes. Each seem to me to understand instinctively where Horace Silver is coming from, let alone where he is going. Last but no tleast, I can't honestly say I prefer any one track over the others but the Blowin' The Blues Away does it for me every time. Enjoy...

This is one of those hynotic early sixties Blue Note sessions that must surely go down as one of Jazz's masterpieces. This was recorded as a dedication to Silver's Japanese fans and the reception his band received whilst on tour there.
We start with the kicking,"Too much Sake." It's Silver's agility and sense of tempo, omnipresent on all his recordings that mark his music out. This track is another classic example.
Then we come to, "Sayonara Blues," for me one of the greatest pieces of music in Jazz. Witness the way Silver builds the tempo from a single starting note, his relentless control of the tempo through two admirable solos from Mitchell and Cook and then his own beautiful arching solo that breaks through the rhythm of the track. ... It took a long time before jazz snobbery began to disappear and it took the Beatles to do it.The Beatles were not lovers of jazz themselves and only really rated Humphrey Lyttleton's Bad Penny Blues -which later influenced Lady Madonna.Lennon once said he hated jazz and I wonder whether THAT remark influenced an 80s band to name themselves
JOHNNY HATES JAZZ but whatever.
The Beatles got rid of the musics snob attachments more by accident than design when so many jazzmen began to record versions of their songs-some doing entire albums like Count Basie.
In 1963 American singer Trini Lopez-after a string of failures on King Records- appeared with the Beatles in Paris shortly after he'd come uup with the concept of recording folk songs with ... Read More:
