Somethin' Else: Remastered

Quite by chance I caught just three or four bars of the theme of "Autumn Leaves" on the radio. It was so obviously Miles, and at his very best. I immediately decided, on the basis of that brief snatch of melody, to try to get the CD. But it was not easy to run it down as, of course, the band was under the (nominal) leadership of Cannonball Adderley.

This is a wonderful CD with all players on top form and I heartily endorse what other reviewers have said. It is worth its modest price just for that exposition of the beautiful "Autumn Leaves" theme!

Make sure you do some reading up on Eric Dolphy before you buy this. Don't expect to hear anything resembling the winning Blue Note hard bop formula characteristic of the fifities and sixties. As far as Jazz goes this is way ahead of it's time, those who know the contemporary Jazz scene will know that there are plenty of acts out there who try and sound exactly like what you hear on this record.
OK, it's not easy listening. For me Dolphy's compositions are no way near as compelling as some of Ornette Colman's for example. It's quirky, mysterious, it has you scratching your chin trying to figure it all out. "Gazzelloni," starts off as very accessible before disappearing into some great flute loops. Add to that William's nuerotic sounding ... Read More:

This album is proof that the criticisms of Wayne Shorter being just another Rollins-Coltrane imitator were indeed fatuous. Shorter, who has always incorporated a stronger element of the blues to his playing than Coltrane did in the mid-sixties, mixes this with some masterful composition and improvisation. Couple this with some astounding support from the polyrhythmic Elvin Jones, a (sometimes over) brassy and exuberant Freddie Hubbard, with the mercurial Herbie Hancock and journeyman Ron Carter.

The compositions themselves are wondrous, opening with "Witch Hunt", an interesting piece with a separate intro that moves straight into the main theme. It is a haunting blues with great solos from Shorter and Hubbard, driven along by Jones' ... Read More:

Musically, this is one of my favourite John Coltrane albums. McCoy Tyner's piano style is transposed to the big band arrangements, making it sound simultaneously familiar and different to all of Coltrane's work up to that point, and I'm always a fan of the music Coltrane made when he teamed up with Eric Dolphy. My five stars go to the music itself, as released at the time.

However, this is one of those annoying reissues that doesn't actually have the original album as people knew and loved at the time. The tracks are spread across two discs, interspersed with alternative takes and bonus tracks which, while interesting to Coltrane fans, aren't the main attraction. If the alternative takes were isolated to the second disc, keeping the original ... Read More:

I bought this album on the strength of the many reviews describing it as a work of genius or a religious experience. Well maybe I have missed the point, but to me this is one of the tedious and frustrating albums I have ever heard. The piece simply repeats the same themes over and over again, with somewhat derivative improvisation. Well played but not well constructed.

That is what Coltrane is on the title track of this album. At what is already a ferocious tempo Coltrane kicks into his first solo playing a double time solo where it seems every chord change has every possible note combination played. I was absolutely astonished when I first heard this. Ira Gitler used the term 'Sheets of Sound' to describe Coltrane's playing, and I'm sure it was this title track that gave him the idea. However don't misunderstand this album. This isn't the Coltrane of the mid 1960's onwards, where I do struggle to keep up with his more avant-garde playing.

The tunes on this album are very strong. 'Naima' is a beautiful slow number that hints at the ballads record he would record a year or two later. The vastly under-rated Wynton Kelly is the ... Read More:

This is my first Cannonball album - I was aware of his stuff with Miles Davis, but this is the first album I bought with him as leader. It pretty much does the job efficiently - grooving very intensely in several places (especially Sticks: Cannonball's solo is sort of Charlie Parker meets James Brown - one to savour, and much too short). Not exactly intellectually challenging - but then the "brainy" stuff from the Sixties is fairly unlistenable now - but tuneful and entertaining.

Just one question - how did Zawinul get the gig? He's pretty terrible in this, and his tunes are pretty ho-hum too. One of those mysteries, I guess.

This beautfully timed record stands shoulder to shoulder with, "No room for squares," as the classic in Mobley's body of work.
Hank's sweet, soulful sax effortlessly hums along on the operner and,"This I dig of you," accompanied by Chambers bass that just pings. Blakey had perfected his technique at this point and was at the very height of his powers, he works with the rest of the rhythm section like a magnificent steam train.
It all slides along to perfection on the effortlessly classy,"Dig Dis," Mobley's round sax bouncing to the rhythm. When you listen to his playing it all sounds so leisurely, like he never has the need to stretch himself
"Split Feelin," is a rolling bluesy number, again technically flawless. The track dovetails nicely into the more ... Read More:

Mr Bungle. With a name like that, you know its gonna be odd, or maybe humorous? Alas, the band have some cool toilet humour included. Some of the talking sections at the end of songs hit the mark, most fall flat however. I dont like the circus sections of the songs. It cheesy, plain and simple. Sometimes the record breaks down into cacophony such as #My Ass is on Fire, which I really enjoy until the 6 minute mark then it gets pointless.

However, there are some excellent songs on here, such as Slowly Growing Deaf, Carousel (which reminds me a bit of Madness when Pattons voice kicks in), The Girls of Porn (extremely humorous lyrics) and Quote Unquote.

They are definately unfocused on a lot of these songs however. I rate Mr Bungle second to Faith No More, ... Read More:

By the time of the recordings of these pieces in 1967 John Coltrane was travelling farther and father out into the musical hinterland of free jazz. This set of recordings with drummer Rashid Ali is about as far as you can get. The music here is wild and powerful and at times violent as Ali and Coltrane at times seem to battle for the space in the music.

This is improvisation of the first order. Coltrane's playing squawks, honks, runs, and stutters its way around the clattering cachophony of Ali's frenetic drumming. Easy listening it isn't. It does seem to be a statement and it is fascinating to wonder where Coltrane would have gone next with his music beacuase listening to this you sometimes conclude that this was something of a final statement. If John Coltrane really was ... Read More:
