I love Herb Alpert. The best known stuff on this album are the likes of the superlatively bouncy Spanish Flea, the sublime A Taste of Honey, the energetic Tijuana Taxi, Tetris theme Zorba the Greek and of course the theme to the original Casino Royale (the one with David Niven) which is so clever it hurts. But there's nothing on this album that doesn't delight.

Mostly it's instrumental, brass band work and very good brass it is. Like a Mariachi band. It's jolly and fun, and it gets me in a good mood and that makes it pretty fab stuff.

South African exile Hugh Masekela hit an artistic height in the Seventies when he returned to Africa and became close friend with Fela Kuti, the originator of the Afro-beat. This collection covers the best of 3 albums recorded in 1971-76 in a style that spans rock, disco, funk, afro-beat, highlife and jazz with the inspired trumpet of Masekela piercing through.
Highlights are many: the exuberant opening track, the pleading Mama, the funky Witch doctor and the title tracks of 2 albums, The boy's doin' it and Colonial man.
At this price this collection is a real steal.

Track 3 on this CD is Tijuana Taxi, which can be heard drifting from the speakers at Leyton Orient football club in London. The club's adoption of 'Taxi' as its walk-out tune makes this album essential for any Orient fan, and an icon for football fans the world over.

Herb, you gave us a signature tune that sets us apart from the crowd, and for that, Leyton Orient fans worldwide salute you!

I came upon Chris Botti purely by chance, and Im glad I did this Album is superb.

This album was recorded as the title suggests during the night when Chris and musicians returned from touring with Sting.

Stand out tracks for me are Tracks;

1. Great opener with Chris in great form.

2. A classic chill down track

3. A more up tempo number with a funky bass beat

7. A great Jazz Funk track which the modern soul crowd would warm too

11. Another dancer excellent suff

This CD captures Masekela's live performance brilliantly. It has the intimacy of his gigs at Ronnie Scotts in recent years.

The opening Abangoma sets the pace with harmonious vocals and horns being driven by drums that just make you want to move. Stimela is a perfect moving climax, sung with real emotion that could only work on a live recording when he has an audience to tell the tale to.

A gem of a CD.

For me, this collection has too many tracks from the naff electro-jazz era and not enough from the classic GRP albums 'Browne Sugar', 'Love Approach' and 'Magic'. Also, my eyes might be deceiving me but that guy on the cover looks nothing like Tom Browne!

8.Kisses in the Rain by: Rick Braun

This music reminds me of the 'Shaft' era; very smooth and rythmical, good double-bass with the odd bongo sound here and there(not odd peculiar!).It's mostly instrumental with only a couple of vocal tracks which aren't quite as good as the others. It's the rythmn you listen to, and all the different layers of sound. It's got a schmoozly and sexy sound, very laid-back and ideal to dance to with the one you love.

After having heard Chris play on Sting's world tour, I simply plunged in and purchased this CD to discover more about this artist.

It's a superb collection of Botti's best songs, both as playing on his own and also being accompanied in a few compositions in three songs.

Botti's crisp tone is what makes this album is polished and lovely to listen to, and can be played at the end of a stressful day to unwind your mind, or played quietly at a dinner party for a group pleasure.

The style of each song doesn't quite flow and at times seems quite disjointed, yet this is to be expected when the best songs are cherry-picked from various albums with varying moods. This is not a bad thing however, it just takes some time to adapt to. ... Read More:

10.Second Wind by: Herb Alpert

Music : Second Wind
Mostly excellent, with lots of input from Jiff LawBa who seems to be something of a consummate collaborator, If not quite in the same league as Bob James. This is an accomplished album, even though a few tracks sound like jams that didn't really make it to a fully realised melody. Also, the bass is decidedly blowsy here and there, but then you listen to tracks like Can't Stop Thinking About You and Flamingo (the latter featuring a guest appearance by Jimmy Johnson on fretless bass) and, well, who cares? Like I said ~ mostly excellent, just slightly compromised by the naff bass.
