This CD is a collection made up from earlier records with typical trad jazz input for which Monty Sunshine is famed. However it is not just Monty Sunshine clarinet dominated, as all the musicians are superb with particularly forceful contributions from trombone, trumpet and banjo. There are opportunities for solos in addition to excellent ensemble playing, and though sometimes a little strained the music is always professional. There is a mixture of live and studio recordings, but all are equally well produced. The choice of numbers is trad jazz inspired with everything from traditional pieces and spirituals to popular tunes and anything melodic in between. I heartily agree this CD would be best enjoyed if the show had been seen in person. This review, though, is based off the CD alone. Pro: Following the life of Peter Allan, the Boy From Oz is an undeniably enthusiastic rendering of his life, using songs Allan wrote. Con: This enthusiasm, however, does sometimes bleed over into happy "cheese." Many people have never heard of Peter Allan until now, and his music does have a somewhat dated sound (70s). Note: If you don't like Liza Minnelli's voice in real life, you won't like how she's rendered here - it's pretty good! The same goes for the style. I purchased these recordings on two 10inch Esquire Lps in the fifties at 29/6 each.At last they have been released in CD format,and the wait was well worth it.The george lewis band was at the height of its power in 1953 as these studio recordings show.The walls jump back two feet when the music starts,and i recommend this cd wholeheartedly

If you're a fan of this genre you've probably heard Mr. Laurie lots of times. His Johnny Dodds-style clarinet playing is complemented on these recordings by bands that had the same aims. These New Orleans revivalists played up-tempo sunshine jazz, but not the trite or "commercial" trad that dishonoured the name. Many of the tracks have mysterious or complicated provenance. More helpful here is a list of personnel: Alan Elsdon, Graham Stewart, Pat Hawes, Brian Munday, Stan Leader, Peter Mawford, Sonny Morris, Ted Ramm, Ian Armit, Diz Disley, and Beryl Bryden wanting Every Bit Of It. George Lewis was one of the earlier New Orleans jazz clarinetists who's sound and method of playing clearly influenced the likes of Acker Bilk, Sammy Rimmington and many others. This recording is very special and could have wide appeal. I am not a religious man but I would confidently place a large bet on my own opinion being right that if one or two of the best hymns on this CD were given reasonable air time on popular radio it would hit the top of the charts very quickly.
