I came to this disk with no prior knowledge of the Temperance Seven or their exploits in the world of jazz. Therefore the contents of the disk came as a very pleasant surprise. What I found was a series of twenty-eight lively and well played jazz numbers, some well known and others less so. For those who appreciate a tight jazz ensemble playing the old style jazz, and doing it well, this series of recordings will be most welcome, as it was for me. The sleeve notes are neatly presented, and although fairly brief, they do give a list of the players and a brief background about the recordings together with a photograph of the group in a session.

The difficulty with this type of CD is that it is pure guesswork what you are getting. Unknown band, most of the tunes end in the word RAG and the band name contains the word SYNCOPATORS. The band name is clearly derived from the Joplin tune Elite Syncopations; that's about as far as the similarity goes. What you get is ragtime music which is clearly intended to appeal to American `country and western' audiences. The music is mainly played on the piano with some backing musicians here and there. The pianist is very good , but is extremely laid-back; would be good for a pensioners tea dance. There are about half-dozen tracks that are a serious attempt to play recognisable syncopated ragtime; these are mostly James Scott composition and are ... Read More:

All 16 tracks of this CD demonstrate the vitality of early jazz. The initial 8 tracks are the recordings made in 1941 by "revivalist" Lu Watters and his Yerba Buena Jazz Band. The second 8 tracks star "veteran" Bunk Johnson playing in 1944 with members of the Yerba Buena Jazz Band, and for 2 of the tracks with spiritual and gospel singer Sister Lottie Peavey.

Lu Watters, cornet player, and other instrumentalists making up the Yerba Buena Band were experienced professional musicians disappointed at big band and arranged swing of jazz developing through the 1930s. Not surprisingly their 8 tracks are well polished with all musicians in tune and in unison. The CD starts with "At A Georgia Camp Meeting" and ... Read More:
