Music : Sentimental Journey
This 4 CD set is an absolute bargain for Spanier admirers at the very low price. All the significant recordings he made (including the "big sixteen") are here and in excellent sound, given the age of the source material. The music, whilst containing a number of let's say "familiar" dixieland tunes such as "Royal Garden Blues", "Muskrat Ramble" etc, (all of which have been done to death by countless other bands)also has a large number of lesser known tracks. All are played superbly by Muggsy with his brilliaant lead trumpet and fellow musicians reading like a Who's Who of jazz. For all lovers of the "real" dixieland/chicago style of jazz, if you ain't got it - get it!

The band of the 70's personel was changing by the time this session was made. Clarinetist, Al Gay had come in place of John Barnes. On trombone, Roy Crimmins had returned in place of Roy Brown. For the early 80's recordings, Denny Wirght was playing guitar, Peter Skivington in on bass and Laurie Chescoe, soon to form another good British jazz band, was the band' drummer
