The voice is the first thing you notice. The early poetic renditions on such classics as "Suzanne", "Sisters of Mercy" and "Famous Blue Raincoat" are presented in a voice that is deadpan but not as gruff as in later years. This was at a period when he was a well kept secret and with a style and presentation that not everyone took to. Move onto disc 2 and you notice how the voice deepens and the songs become bigger. One thing that Cohen has never failed to deliver is quality songs with curious stories to tell. He has an almost hymn-like or gospel touch on a lot of his work, usually enhanced by superb backing singers and wondrous musicians and arrangements.

I move between both of his periods with equal ease, but I find the latter ... Read More:

First off this is truly a superb gig. The track listing is faultless and the performances, though beautifully flawed at times, are blistering. It is a far superior document of the Ziggy period Bowie to the 73' retirement gig at the Hammersmith Odeon.

I already own the 94' official release of this concert on the mainman `golden years' label. I bought this new EMI edition because I had read somewhere that Bowie had remastered the recording himself. He hasn't! Listening to it I cannot really detect any significant differences in sonic quality from the 94' release.

What is shockingly obvious however is the absence of big chunks and small snippets of Bowie's playingly camp dialogue with his audience throughout. Where's his "painter ... Read More:

I was going to mention Clapton's christening of the Les Paul, Marshall setup, but others have beaten me to it. I liken it's impact to what happened to harp playing when Little Walter and other's deciding to blow through the PA or an early guitar amp. They REDEFINED the sound of the instrument.

So all I'll add is the rhetorical question...can you imagine being a teenage Brit, having been reared on the sounds of the Beatles, Jerry and the Pacemakers, or even the Dave Clark Five, wandering into a London club because someone had recommended the Bluesbreakers, and hearing THIS STUFF? Probably as epiphanic as being a white guy in mid 50's Chicago and having the nerve to wander into the Dew Drop Inn and hearing Muddy, Wolf, or later, Otis Rush and ... Read More:

There really are not words enough to describe the sweep and grandeur of Leonard's 1988 masterpiece. Age cannot wither, nor custom stale its infinite variety. There are many common misperceptions of Mr.Cohen, but none more frustrating to a lifelong fan than that of suicidal, morbid folk-singer. My own personal vision is of the ultimate caberet crooner, the last-dance, last-chance, end-of-the-night performer, dispensing gems of wisdom sometimes with an urbane humour, but always with love and a song in his heart: a mixture of Aznavour, Brel, and Noel Coward, with a little Brecht thrown in for good measure. This album answers perfectly that call, most seductively and gorgeously in LC's reading of Lorca's 'Little Viennese Waltz' (here recast as TAKE THIS WALTZ): "There's ... Read More:

In my books, David Bowie is one of best pop musical icon to emerge from Britain. He burst into the music scene in the 1969 and continued to blossom as an artist throughout the 70's, 80's to present. The album reviewed (The Best of Bowie) combines all his hits in a two disc set. These include mega 69 classic such as Space Oddity to 70's Life on Mars, Ziggy Stardust to memorable 80's ballads such as Under pressure, China Girl and a no 1 Lets dance.

David Bowie music genre can be defined as a combination of punk, rock and pop. He is exceptionally gifted and great artist, with a wonderful voice, good charisma and a great image to back it up. In the music scene in 1970's, image became paramount such as hairstyle and style of clothes in which David Bowie distinctly had ... Read More:

With its plain white sleeve and pared-down arrangements, the White Album was released as something of an antidote to its predecessor Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Although it lacks Pepper's cohesion, it has an incredible, unbelievable diversity and is brilliant in places.

Recorded at a time when tensions between The Beatles were at their height, the White Album is also one of the first double albums of new material ever released by a pop or rock band. As with most double discs, there are some critics who say that The Beatles should have cut out the fillers and released a single LP. Whilst I see their argument, I disagree with them - the strength of the White Album is its variety and, though every track isn't a classic, there's only a handful I would consider ... Read More:

Cohen made three classic albums with John Lissaeur at the helm: 1974's New Skin For The Old Ceremony, 1979's Recent Songs, but at the apex of these achievements stands 1984's Various Positions, in that it paved the way for a new audience to discover Leonard Cohen afresh. This wasn't done by just adding the odd synthesised drone here and there, for there is the same continuity of themes and musical genres threaded consistently through the works (compare New Skin's 'Why Don't You Try?' or 'I Tried To Leave You' alongside Recent Songs' 'Came So Far For Beauty' or 'The Smokey Life', i.e., and you'll find they sit naturally next to tracks like 'Hallelujah' or 'Coming Back To You', whereas 'Night Comes On' and 'If It Be Your Will' would not have sounded out of place on Songs From A Room). Following 'Dark Side Of The Moon' must have been difficult. So kudos to the Floyd for creating 'Wish You Were Here', for many their finest work. By their usual standards, this is remarkably gentle and can be easily appreciated by fans of all genres.

One of Pink Floyd's most famous songs, 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' is a loving tribute to the late, great Syd Barrett. A nine part composition split into two, It's a thing of beauty from start to finish made all the more poignant by the fact that Barrett himself, suddenly showed up at the studio whilst Floyd were recording that very song, prompting Richard Wright to proclaim it as "Karma, Fate, who knows?".

Things take a darker tone with 'Welcome To The Machine' and 'Have A Cigar', attacks on the hypocricy and greed of the music industry. ... Read More:
