This cd is amazing, it sold over 26 million the year it came out, and now that it has been released it still is selling, ABBA has sold over 7,000 cd's every day!!! The music on this cd is fantastic, best music there ever is, and the other ABBA cd is amazing music, all there music is fantastic, this cd is somethink that everyone should own cause it is fantastic, catchy, like 1. This compilation album needs little introduction as it has sold a zillion copies or something ;), and there is a reason for that. Nobody, not even The Beatles have created a finer collection of pop songs. Pop is often sneered at by some hoity toity music lovers, but there is no need. A finely crafted 3 minute pop tune can be just as meaningful and exquisite as any other piece of music. The tunes Bjorn & Benny created will live on forever, and the girls singing stays in your mind so very easily. For me this is not their ultimate collection, as I liked more of the bitter-sweet songs they did like Eagle and The Day Before You Came. But that's a personal preference. Grace Jones relativley short music career never really hit the heights of success it often deserved. Her first three disco albums, PORTFOLIO (1977), FAME (1978) and MUSE (1979) were fairly forgetable although they did spawn at least one memroable track per album - all of which make there way onto this definitive compilation of Grace Jones work. LA VIE EN ROSE, I NEED A MAN and DO OR DIE had that early Grace Jones disco sound which was quickly abandoned in 1980 prior to the release of one of her very best albums, WARM LEATHERETTE, which succesfully combined the sounds of New Wave, reggae, rock and funk. I remember listening to this when it came out, through earphones, the volume up very high and the lights turned out.....it scared the heck out of me!! Well, I was young and sensitive. Although there is seemingly very little of Miss Jones on this cd, her usual powerful vocal style still penetrates when it appears amongst the stunning effects from Trevor Horn. A couple of the tracks seem a little dated now but altogether still a fantastic collection of tracks, prose and mini-biography, the voice of Ian McShane is still goosepimply-rich and used to great effect. I would think that true Grace Jones fans may be dissappointed with this cd, but I think that if it is the first one that you hear, as it was with me, and it then leads you on to the rest of her back catalogue, then it ... For all its world-conquering success, ABBA Gold didn't really "rehabilitate" ABBA. The casual track sequencing and the choice of only the biggest hits means that a lot of good stuff was missed. The kitsch that dogged the early part of ABBA's career seems to be reinforced. With The Definitive Collection, however, you get (a) all of the tracks that appear on Gold, (b) plus the additional gems that couldn't be included on Gold, and (c) very elegant packaging. Another great plus with this set is that the tracks are sequenced chronologically. This makes it easier to see how the group progressed from their somewhat "innocent" early days to their remarkably affecting early 80s output. Wow, not a single reviewer rates it less than five stars. As good as they may be, later albums sound contrived in comparison. It's just fresher more 'alive' than his other stuff. If you don't already have this, don't hesitate.

Featuring all of Duran's mega 80's hits, and a few 90's ones you may not be familiar with, this collection of hits is an excellent compiliation of the bands best work. Almost timeless hits on here which quite rightly get their due, a Duran Duran greatest hits had been long overdue, and in 1998 with their commercial success at an all time low, this release was a timely reminder of how good they are. Re-released in 2004 to even better commerical success during a sell out UK tour, Duran Duran proved that chart success may only be temporary, but class is permenant.

I'm not going to knock Michael Jackson for all the extra curricular stuff that seems now to tower over any of his musical achievements,I'm also going to point out that he's since made far inferior albums-my beef with Jacko is that this album was the soundtrack to hundreds of car journeys following my brother getting it as a 13th birthday present back in 1988. Even back then, with my limited powers of criticism I hated it, now I've had years to dwell on the reasons why. To put it simply-songs-or lack of- are the problem. The title track sounds like someone's little brat in the throes of a paddy pants-down, 'The Way You Make Me Feel', the album's most melodic offering is ruined by the sound of someone dropping a toolbox down a flight of stairs every twelve bars,'Speed Demon' is just, really, really terrible, ... Barry White didn't mean a great deal to me until I worked night shift in a local factory, when he was played quite a lot as the local station's 'sexy, night-time music.' Well, it may have been those things and more if you were at home on the sofa or in bed, but on night shift? But having your sleeping habits turned topsey-turvey certainly gave his music a more receptive edge and the emotions became much sharper, and the 'You See The Trouble With Me' track, which has a quirky and unusual kind of guitar backing really started to appeal.
