This cd is amazing, it sold over 26 million the year it came out, and now that it has been released it still is selling, ABBA has sold over 7,000 cd's every day!!! The music on this cd is fantastic, best music there ever is, and the other ABBA cd is amazing music, all there music is fantastic, this cd is somethink that everyone should own cause it is fantastic, catchy, like 1. This compilation album needs little introduction as it has sold a zillion copies or something ;), and there is a reason for that. Nobody, not even The Beatles have created a finer collection of pop songs. Pop is often sneered at by some hoity toity music lovers, but there is no need. A finely crafted 3 minute pop tune can be just as meaningful and exquisite as any other piece of music. The tunes Bjorn & Benny created will live on forever, and the girls singing stays in your mind so very easily. For me this is not their ultimate collection, as I liked more of the bitter-sweet songs they did like Eagle and The Day Before You Came. But that's a personal preference. I bought the special edition with the book, DVD, CDs with outtakes, auditions, missing pieces etc. But I also wanted to hear The War Of The Worlds in ultra high quality SACD. Well, I feel let down. The quiet parts get cut, e.g. echoes pop in and out. It seems the recording engineer has cut all sound below a certain level from the mix tapes. Going back to my original CD version, there is certainly more noise but there is also a hell of lot more depth to the sound. Playing them side by side, I hear a complete change in the mixes right the way through. I noticed that the vocals of the SACD are muted by comparison to the CD version. This is not what SACD is about, this recording sounds like an early 80s digital recording, very reminiscent ... Read More:

So I've just moved home and my record collection is in complete disaray. I want to listen to something before going on a big (and I mean big) night out but I can't find anything Then I see this. I haven't listened to this for years. In fact I'm not sure I've lisened to it since I got it from a charity shop (where most of my vinyl comes from) about eight years ago. It sounds wonderful. If you have this record I suggest that you put it on now. Nothing needs to be said about Grace Jones, a woman whose image eventually overcame the music until all most people can remember is her attacking Russell Harty. Grace Jones relativley short music career never really hit the heights of success it often deserved. Her first three disco albums, PORTFOLIO (1977), FAME (1978) and MUSE (1979) were fairly forgetable although they did spawn at least one memroable track per album - all of which make there way onto this definitive compilation of Grace Jones work. LA VIE EN ROSE, I NEED A MAN and DO OR DIE had that early Grace Jones disco sound which was quickly abandoned in 1980 prior to the release of one of her very best albums, WARM LEATHERETTE, which succesfully combined the sounds of New Wave, reggae, rock and funk. From the album was PRIVATE LIFE (a top 20 success in the U.K) which also is rightly included on this album as this by far is one of her greatest recordings. I remember listening to this when it came out, through earphones, the volume up very high and the lights turned out.....it scared the heck out of me!! Well, I was young and sensitive. Although there is seemingly very little of Miss Jones on this cd, her usual powerful vocal style still penetrates when it appears amongst the stunning effects from Trevor Horn. A couple of the tracks seem a little dated now but altogether still a fantastic collection of tracks, prose and mini-biography, the voice of Ian McShane is still goosepimply-rich and used to great effect. I would think that true Grace Jones fans may be dissappointed with this cd, but I think that if it is the first one that you hear, as it was with me, and it then leads you on to the rest of her back catalogue, then it is a good way to ... For all its world-conquering success, ABBA Gold didn't really "rehabilitate" ABBA. The casual track sequencing and the choice of only the biggest hits means that a lot of good stuff was missed. The kitsch that dogged the early part of ABBA's career seems to be reinforced. With The Definitive Collection, however, you get (a) all of the tracks that appear on Gold, (b) plus the additional gems that couldn't be included on Gold, and (c) very elegant packaging. Another great plus with this set is that the tracks are sequenced chronologically. This makes it easier to see how the group progressed from their somewhat "innocent" early days to their remarkably affecting early 80s output. Wow, not a single reviewer rates it less than five stars. As good as they may be, later albums sound contrived in comparison. It's just fresher more 'alive' than his other stuff. If you don't already have this, don't hesitate.

Barry White didn't mean a great deal to me until I worked night shift in a local factory, when he was played quite a lot as the local station's 'sexy, night-time music.' Well, it may have been those things and more if you were at home on the sofa or in bed, but on night shift? But having your sleeping habits turned topsey-turvey certainly gave his music a more receptive edge and the emotions became much sharper, and the 'You See The Trouble With Me' track, which has a quirky and unusual kind of guitar backing really started to appeal.
