I admit I've always been a bit biassed against this release. In Holland we were blessed with a compilation release called "So Many Roads" which had the original singles mixes of Double Touble & It Hurts Me Too, not the US-mixes that are on this "Looking Back" comp that omit Peter Green's trademark space-echo guitar sound and add an annoying tingling piano to It Hurts Me Too.

That being said, there are other treasures to be found here. Suspicion pt.1, even though pt.2 is the better track, & Jenny are welcome additions to my Mayall collection. The live recording of Stormy Monday is notable only for the line-up of the Bluesbreakers, which included both Clapton & Jack Bruce, but falls way below par in ... Read More:

Now, I wouldn't call myself an avid Eric Clapton fan - yes I like some of his early work, but in total I only have four CD's (including Derek & The Dominoes and Blind Faith) and the unplugged & sessions for Robert Johnson DVD's. So, listening and watching (I have the 2 CD + DVD edition) this in a "neutral" capacity I was thoroughly impressed by the contents. The tracks are varied and yes, do include the big hits you would expect (Layla, Tears in Heaven etc.) and, there are great renditions of Badge and Bell Bottom Blues. The playing is tight from a collection of extremely talented and experienced musicians with Billy Preston delivering vocals on one of the end tracks. So it's five stars from me.

He released Journeyman which was cool and then...as far as an original album of material goes there was Pilgrim and then this. Now, Pilgrim was full of strong songs that were poorly (or overly) produced by Simon Climie. This album has fairly weak material that Mr Climie seems to have had sound more natural. Which is a shame because the songs on Pilgrim are so much stronger and ones that Eric really cared about. Even worse, Back Home, the follow up in terms of a 'normal' Clapton album, was not only weak in terms of songs, but those 'orrible production values were back in the fray. In this sense, apart from Me and Mr Johnson, this is the best Eric Clapton album in years.
Its an interesting concept involving Eric's upbringing (Reptile being a term ... Read More:

So sang Mike D'Abo as Manfred Mann rose to the top of the UK charts in 1968 for the third and last time. This compilation is book-ended by two Bob Dylan songs (Mighty Quinn, Just like a woman), both of which were among the seven top ten UK hits that Manfred Mann clocked up with Mike D'Abo as lead singer between 1966 and 1969 following the departure of the original lead singer, Paul Jones.

Another of their big hits, Fox on the run, has since become popular in bluegrass music circles. On reflection, it's easy to understand why - its simple, driving rhythm and the rural references in the lyrics makes it ideally suited for adaptation to that style of music. You may not be able to find many pop and rock covers of Fox on the run, but you'll find plenty of bluegrass ... Read More:

Manfred Mann's Earthband were in a purple patch in the late 70s and early 80s. Gone was the do wah diddy lightweight pop and in was synthesiser and guitar based rock. Chris Thompson on vocals is brilliant, he has the sort of voice that would sound good reading the phone book, but this is also a fine collection of songs.

Once again, Mann dipped into the Bob Dylan songbook, this time coming up with the melodic "you angel you". Don't kill it Carol is probably the most commercial song, but for me, the best tracks on the album are "angels at my gate" and the stand-out "waiting for the rain". Listen to angels at my gate and wonder if Peter Gabriel's 'Games Without Frontieres' might have been influenced by this track.

Unfortunately, releasing a light rock ... Read More:

Definetly value for money in my oppinion. However be warned that the only decent songs are in the first cd, namely the first four tracks. I found that there was a huming noise in the background which stopped you from turning the volume too high up, and everybody knows that jimi sounds his greatest at the max no of decibels. Also some of the tracks (purple haze) sound like they were rehersal recordings. If you want the best of jimi look somewere else, however if you want some of the rarest sounds of jimi, this is a definete buy.

Well, folks, you know that anything by Rory is going to be worth listening to, but if you are anything like me, you play the CDs to death for a year and then file them under "indispensible". What happened here is that my daughter, having seen Fall Out Boy live in Newport last Friday, grubbed about in the cars and the cupboards to see what was about from Dad's prehistoric era and came up with Top Priority. Fall Out Boy, with the relentless thrash and monochord banging, failed to ignite the senses, so to speak. They also left me deaf and numb from the ridiculous volume they played at - made Cream seem like Freddie and the Dreamers (RIP, Freddie).

I had forgotten just how accomplished this little-promoted collection is. My band used to perform Follow Me, and it's a great powerful ... Read More:

Glorified Magnified was, for my money, the ultimate pinnacle of the Earth Band's achievements. An extraordinary range of styles are in evidence and the band play with fluidity and a great deal more confidence than on their earlier eponymous debut. In truth the subsequent Messin' and Solar Fire albums were more overtly "prog" than Glorified Magnified, each boasting longer tracks than we find here, but there are moments throughout when Rogers and Mann's exchanges hint strongly of spacier things to come.

"Meat" kicks the album off terrifically with a beat which wouldn't have been out of place on a Sweet hit single
(where did Mick Tucker get the rhythm for "Ballroom Blitz" from anyway?). Duck calls and processed vocals abound
as the band hit a groove with Rogers excelling ... Read More:
