This compilation covers the period 1967 to 1972 and contains the best tracks from their most famous period. They have recorded some interesting music since then, most notably the album Boogie 2000, which I've already reviewed.

Here you can find all their big hits. On the road again, my favorite track, was a UK top ten hit and a USA top 20 hit in 1968. Going up the country became a top 20 hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Let's work together was Canned Heat's biggest UK hit, reaching the top three although it was only a top 30 hit in America. Bryan Ferry later covered it as Let's stick together and also had a huge British hit with it. Country singer Dwight Yoakam also recorded a great cover of the song, proving that a great song can ... I may have told you I bought the Pretty
Things Psychedelic double-album,
very good value if you like that sixties
sort of beat-group rock.
I wasn't a big Pretties fan at the time
but it's quite lively listening now. About
36 tracks.

At the time (1960s) the Pretty Things were
always regarded as a kind of "poor man's Stones",
and that's how I saw them, too.

Yeah, me too, after their one hit back in '64 I didn't
take much notice of them. The lead singer wasn't
as pretty as Jagger either, I think that's what did it
for them.
Turns out they metamorphosised from
r'n'b into a psychedelic band in '66, '67
and onward. Very experimental for the time.

113.The Paul Butterfield Blues Band by: Paul Butterfield
October 27, 1994
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : The Paul Butterfield Blues Band
The Butterfield Band's debut album from 1965 was traditional Muddy Waters-style Chicago blues but played with real power and authenticity that was miles ahead of any British band. It's hard to imagine now the impact it made at the time but I remember my jaw literally dropping when I heard the tough, forceful sound of "Born in Chicago" for the first time. Butterfield's harp is very much to the fore in many of the tracks and he gets a great thick, dirty wedge of sound that again no British player could get anywhere near. It's very much an ensemble record, played in an uncompromising traditional style and featuring wonderful songs by Elmore James, Little Walter and Junior Parker.

Although Butterfield didn't mean a great deal in Britain, in the States ... Read More:

SF Sorrow is rightly lauded as one of the great early concept albums. It is pretty much of its era. If you are into things like the Yellow Submarine film then you'll probably love this. If not then you'd best look elsewhere.

What is especially enticing about this package is the "Live at Abbey Road 1998" version of the album produced under the tile "Resurrection".

This was recorded live in the studio and shows off the band's virtuosity. I think it's better than the original, particularly with the addition of a narration by Arthur Brown (Of Crazy World fame).

One of the great lost concept albums

116.Hey, Where's Your Brother by: Johnny Winter

Music : Hey, Where's Your Brother
Ive been listening to this album for ten years or more and I never tire of the creativity of the guitar playing, the excellent vocals and great numbers. Johnny Winter seems to prove with this album that a great artist can get even better with the experience gained from years of practising thier art.The interplay of the musicians is allways dynamic and the album retains a live feel with no apparent overdubing of guitar tracks. The riffs and grooves sound authentic in a blues sense but with the added johnny Winter brand of passion and energy. But it is with the soloing that his evolution as a guitarist seems most highlighted. He seems able on this album to produce an almost endlessy creative flow of articulate musical phrases as if hes drawing on the vocabulary of a guitar ... Whoever Jeff Bateman is, I think we can ignore his assertion that Coverdale is a 'third-rate Plant'. For one thing, Coverdale's range was greater than Percy's, even from his Burn debut. For another, he is closer to Rodgers as a singer anyway. And let's also add that the Whitesnake songwriting template owes more to Lizzy, Free/Bad Co, and Purple (doh, wonder why that is...), than to Zeppelin. Slow an' Easy and Still of the Night owe something to Zep, admittedly, but the latter borrows a lot more from Purple's Rat Bat Blue than from Black Dog. Lyrically, though, Planty has shown a lot more breadth and imagination than Coverdale, whose lyrics on the new Whitesnake album are at times quite appalling! And Plant's stage presentation is classier - he certainly swears a lot less... ... Read More:

This cd carefully covers -almost- the first "stages" of his career, from Johm Mayall's bluesbreakers to Derek and the Dominos. I know what you are thinking WHERE IS THE YARDBIRDS, the reason why I rate this with a four stars not five. Still it has Cream's fine version of Crossroads which almost makes up for the absence of "Smokestack Lightening" -a great Yardbirds live performance. Actually I will roccomend this to be bought with "THE VERY BEST OF THE YARDBIRDS" which Clapton plays on about half of the tracks.

But back to this CD, the fact that it opens with Steppin' Out you can't go far wrong, a chance to hear him young and at his peak. I suppose even if you are not a big Cream fan, Crossroads is still esential, so why not get this instead of a full Cream album. ... Read More:

Well, folks, you know that anything by Rory is going to be worth listening to, but if you are anything like me, you play the CDs to death for a year and then file them under "indispensible". What happened here is that my daughter, having seen Fall Out Boy live in Newport last Friday, grubbed about in the cars and the cupboards to see what was about from Dad's prehistoric era and came up with Top Priority. Fall Out Boy, with the relentless thrash and monochord banging, failed to ignite the senses, so to speak. They also left me deaf and numb from the ridiculous volume they played at - made Cream seem like Freddie and the Dreamers (RIP, Freddie).

I had forgotten just how accomplished this little-promoted collection is. My band used to perform Follow Me, and it's a ... Read More:
