Music : No Quarter: Jimmy Page & Robert Plant Unledded
Think of all the Led Zeppelin songs you love. Now think of them all played on "Eastern bazaar" instuments that can't be tuned to the pentatonic scale. This crushingly disappointing album brings nothing to the music that defined a rock standard. Witness the number of copies for sale "new or used", and you will realise that dozens before me made the same bad mistake when they bought this self-indulgent offering from Page and Plant. The reviewers who gave it 5 stars are either suffering cognitive dissonance, or took too many of the drugs that the album's stars enjoyed back when they were good.

Sanctuarey is my intro to Charlie, and I could not have picked a better album (I now own 3). There is a laid back feel to the whole album, the same kind of laid back that JJ Cale does so well. Ben Harper plays superbly on a couple of songs, and it fits really well with the rest of the songs. The Blind Boys also guest in 2 numbers. This is not an album dominated by any one instrument, just a very tasteful mix of mellow, laid back blues. Charlies harp is superb, as is his voice. This is an album that lives in my car. I aspire to be as chilled as he is one day! Spend the money, you won't regret it.

Joplin's debut may perhaps be described as a glorious marriage of bluesand soul. Don't be mislead by the original psychedelic album cover - thisis not the acid-rock Janis. She turns the Bee Gees' To Love Somebody intoa wrenching torch song, an at times restrained, at times desperate, butalways brilliant rendition. The arrangements impress throughout, especially in the complex and moving As Good As You've Been and KozmicBlues. Another favorite of mine is Maybe, where she out-souls ArethaFranklin. It may not be as accessible as "Pearl," but this albumnevertheless amply rewards the listener and reveals another aspect of thismistress of the desperation blues.

How could I be the first to review this shattering album, still outstanding after nearly 40 years - released in 1967/8 amid the confusion of Johnny's jet propelled rise to fame after a long struggle through his youth, this album does not have a dud track, along with Second Winter it is still my favourite, Johnny at his roaring best, young, full of vigour and energy and his guitar playing all new, every note meant and deeply felt, fresh and wild. Plus Uncle John "Red" Turner on drums and Tommy Shannon on bass - how could it fail - they were truly the rhythm section to beat. I would love to have heard him perform "I got love if you want it" live, it has such an uplifting rhythym - to cut a long story short it is a marvellous album and if you like the blues ... Manfred Mann's line-up included a saxophonist, a rarity in the sixties pop music scene. This very successful group had three distinct phases in their career. The second phase, with Mike D'Abo as lead singer, yielded seven top ten UK hits including Mighty Quinn, while the third phase, Manfred Mann's Earth band, yielded three top ten UK hits including Blinded by the light. This compilation focuses on the first phase when Paul Jones was the lead singer.

During this phase, which covers the period to mid-1966, the group had six top ten UK hits, two of which (Do wah diddy diddy, Pretty Flamingo) made number one. Two other hits peaked at number eleven. Their final hit, You gave me somebody to love (an excellent song), failed to make the top thirty but this ... Read More:

Ive been listening to this album for ten years or more and I never tire of the creativity of the guitar playing, the excellent vocals and great numbers. Johnny Winter seems to prove with this album that a great artist can get even better with the experience gained from years of practising thier art.The interplay of the musicians is allways dynamic and the album retains a live feel with no apparent overdubing of guitar tracks. The riffs and grooves sound authentic in a blues sense but with the added johnny Winter brand of passion and energy. But it is with the soloing that his evolution as a guitarist seems most highlighted. He seems able on this album to produce an almost endlessy creative flow of articulate musical phrases as if hes drawing on the vocabulary of a guitar ... Ok, I respect the fact that the previous reviewer is a top 500 contributor, but still... this album is well above average by just about anyone's standards. It doesn't hit the heights of splendour that other live Jimi albums do (Woodstock, Band of Gypsys) but it's got some great moments on it.

That's not to deny that it has its flaws. Jimi's guitar suddenly drops out of tune at the start of Voodoo Child, turning the first minute or so into an atonal mess until he recovers. Minor technical hitches crop up in Machine Gun and he also messes up a bit while jamming in Lover Man.

But there are some great moments on the album too, not least a wonderful version of Watchtower and Machine Gun, the latter of which is 20-minutes of dazzling technical brilliance ... Read More:

Music : The Best of Jeff Beck
On a visit to Germany in 2000, I found myself looking around a CD megastore with a few Marks burning a hole in my pocket. Being a massive fan of Wolverhampton Wanderers, I had a passing interest in Jeff Beck, as his song 'Hi Ho Silver Lining' (or 'Hi Ho Wolverhampton' as we Wolves fans like to sing) is played before Wolves' home matches.
So I bought 'Jeff Beck; the Best Of.'
This album is astoundingly good, praise best explained by the fact that 'Hi Ho Silver Lining' is one of my least favourite songs on the CD: and I love 'Hi Ho Silver Lining.'
Most of the songs on the CD come from a time when Beck was collaborating with Rod Stewart, which adds class, and some of my favourite tracks include 'I've Been Drinking Again,' 'Morning Dew,' 'Jailhouse Rock,' 'All Shook Up'... ... Read More:
