I am delighted to report that this is a genuine Yardbirds album. For the sake of beefing up the band that has only Jim McCarty and Chris Dreja from the original line-up they have brought in some guitar heroes to guest on odd track, including the genuine Yardbirds guitar hero Jeff Beck on My Blind Life. The others include:

Joe Satriani on The Train Kept A Rollin'
Steve Vai on Shape of Things
Slash on Over, Under, Sideways, Down
Brian May on Mr. You're a Better Man Than I

These guests beef up the sound for sure but there is plenty good guitar work from Gypie Mayo on the track with just the band, The balance of old and new songs is good, acknowledging the past whist embracing the present. This is not ... Read More:

The first album I ever bought, way back in the mid sixties - and it still sounds good. While the Stones were still making pale copies of Chuck Berry and early Tamla Motown, the Pretty Things were already ploughing their own furrow - there is some seriously weird stuff on this album (Can't Stand the Pain) as well as some very dirty guitar (Gonna Find a Substitute) a little proto-Brit soul (Get the Picture) a little swamp blues (Raining in my Heart)and even a drop of folk rock (London Town) - not forgetting the classic cover of Cry To Me. This has not dated - it's a classic - buy it, if you know what's good for you.

Relatively quiet compared to his usual genius.
still a good cd with some great blues riffs.
includes the likes of jimmy page and well worth
the very low price on offer.
it's one of those that doesn't have claptons best
numbers but he is jammin away with some amazing
musicians. that's what's missing in music today.
buy this if you like eric clapton!!

This is a wonderful album. It marked Clapton's sobriety following his heroin usage, and has a theme of redemption and rebirth running through it. Also, there's a strong taste of someone who has turned himself inside and out.

In places, this is passionate, elsewhere playful, and in many places you can hear a man asking himself what he has left. Fantastic stuff, strongly recommended.

Ok, so unsurprisingly PG here isn't as good as his FM days... But nobody really expected him to be! This is pretty much the first time he'd been seriously back in a studio or on stage for over a decade. Most of the tracks are live, and after a few listens it's easy to develop a few favourites, and to skip on the average ones. But I've discovered it's actually a more enjoyable cd if approached fresh, and just left to play in order. The sound quality is very good, and the splinter group are certainly solid and capable, but I imagine most people will be buying this cd to hear PG:
And considering this is essentially his come-back after everything he's been through, he's mostly excellent. So ok his voice isn't great (and does improve on later splinter ... Read More:

It was a long time ago, 1982; Ronald Reagan ruled America, Margaret Thatcher ruled Britain, and Nelson Mandela was still a prisoner. So along comes a band, led by a South African, trying to get back to the form that gave them two American number ones, but also trying to tell stories about the world they live in. Difficult when, like the Earth Band, you don't have a surefire song writer on the roster. The big idea of the album is the use of African singing mixed in with the usual Earth Band rock; a wonderful mix, but the quality of the African singing highlights the patchiness of some of the material. Nevertheless, there's some great guitar playing by Trevor Rabin, brilliant keyboard work by Manfred, some innovative (for the time) beats, and probably the only ... Read More:
