191.Still Alive & Well by: Johnny Winter
April 21, 2008
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Still Alive & Well
Top stuff from the illustrated man. The best albino blues guitarist fron Texas lets it rip. From the Jagger-Richard rocker "Silver Train" (written specially for him - Blimey!), to the country-rock "Ain't Nothing to Me", Johnny is without peer at this sort of stuff. Not quite as good as "Second Winter", but still good enough for five stars.

All I can say is - play track 7 continuously. 'Jeff's Blues' is only one of the greatest bursts of firebolt guitar ever produced by mortal man. Yes - it is, admittedly, the same as 'The Nazz is Blue' from the 'Roger the Engineer' album - but stop a moment and reflect on the fact that this one track was recorded some months before Clapton had even contemplated playing on the Bluesbreakers album (being as he was in hokey over in Greece). Meester Beck has always been one or ten steps ahead of his compatriots - listen to no. 7 and find out why..................................................................................................................

This album is in my top 5 favourite albums. Both Nick Gravenites and Mike Bloomfield are on top form. Most of the album was recorded live in the very late 60's. The sound quality is exceptional! The songs are terrific, but the driving force is Bloomfield's stupendous guitaring. Bloomfield found fame with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, then Electric Flag -which also featured Gravenites. Mike Bloomfield never ever reached the same heights again and, yet again, another great guitarist went on to die way too young. This album isn't instantly loveable, it needs several listens before the quality smacks you in the face. It's the sort of album you need to give your full attention to to fully appreciate.
If you're already familiar with both Gravenites ... Read More:

Well I don't know much about rory gallagher, in fact I knew nothing about him before christmas, but I know what I like, and this album is great. As I am new to rory's music, I can't compare the song selection or sound quality with his albums, but if this is poor, his albums must be mindblowing.
Great songs, with some amazing solos and a great run of five live performances at the end of disk 1. As for sound quality, I don't see what there is to complain about, everything sound crystal clear to me. Another nice feature, for any guitarists out there anyway, is the booklet. It may seem like a pretty insignificant thing, but in it rory talks about his influences, guitars and guitar techniques and equipment he uses etc.
Overall this is a great ... Read More:
